An Australian breakdancer set to compete at Paris 2024<\/a> as her sport makes its Olympic Games<\/a> debut has hit out over the distribution of government funding.<\/p>\n

Rachael Gunn<\/a>, a 36-year-old university lecturer nicknamed "Raygun",\ufeff is angry that only $35,000 was allocated to "dance sport", as it's categorised by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), for the 2023-24 financial year.<\/p>\n

The only sport that was given less money for this financial year was "flying disc",\ufeff which received $30,000.<\/p>\n

On the contrary, swimming was handed a table-topping $16,820,000, with rowing ($12,783,000), athletics (12,713,477), cycling ($12,703,044) and sailing ($10,583,000) rounding out the top five.<\/p>\n

Gunn does not begrudge the sports that dominated the allocation but is annoyed that her sport was afforded so little.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"You have to invest," Gunn told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"There's so much potential [for breaking] in Australia and we just need the opportunity. We need the space, the support structures to … focus on our training, to connect with experts in breaking, and we just haven't had these opportunities and we're going to be left behind.<\/p>\n

"I think every country that's qualified so far, their athletes are in specialised training camps\ufeff, they have been for years … and we have trouble accessing even just a space to train, so it's a completely different landscape.<\/p>\n

"It's the same with skateboarding. If we've got these new sports included in the Olympics, and we all know one of the reasons the Olympics is doing this is to connect with newer audiences, we've got to make sure the athletes can be supported to perform and to represent their country to the best of their ability. But we're struggling at the moment."<\/p>\n

A total of $193,719,591 was split between 70 national sporting organisations (NSOs) for the 2023-24 financial year.<\/p>\n

Within the allocation overseen by the ASC, funding was also divided between high-performance and pathways able-bodied sport, high-performance and pathways para sport, participation growth and a column titled "other", referring to initiatives such as the Women Leaders in Sport (WLIS) program. Breaking was only allocated funding in the "other" stream.<\/p>\n

Gunn has a PhD in breaking culture and works full-time at Sydney's Macquarie University, where she lectures in media, creative arts, literature and language.\ufeff<\/p>\n

When told by Wide World of Sports that swimming had been allocated \ufeff$16,820,000 and dance sport $35,000, Gunn baulked.<\/p>\n

"That's a huge difference," she said.<\/p>\n

"I know medal contention is a big factor and these are all really established sports that have amazing track records for Australia, so I'm not surprised that there is a lot more investment [in those sports], but there is a huge difference there and it would just be nice if they could find a bit more money to invest in some of these newer sports so that we could at least get a chance to train and build a track record."<\/p>\n

Although breaking will make its Olympic debut\ufeff in Paris, it's been snubbed from the list of sports locked in for the Los Angeles Games of 2028. That's despite the fact the sport originated in the US, with African-American and Latino youths creating the sport in the Bronx, New York City in the 1970s.<\/p>\n

Gunn and Australian teen star Jeff\ufeff Dunne, who goes by "J-Attack", both qualified for Paris 2024 by winning the Oceania Olympic qualifying event, held at Sydney's Town Hall in October.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
