Former Test batter Ed Cowan has claimed most people would agree with Mitchell Johnson<\/a>'s explosive takedown of David Warner<\/a>, describing his former opening partner as "a walking wicket".<\/p>\n

Johnson \ufeffunleashed a scathing attack on Warner and national selector George Bailey<\/a> in a column for a Western Australia newspaper<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n

He called out Warner's sub-par Test form while suggesting Bailey gave preferential treatment to players he played alongside.<\/p>\n

Johnson also referenced the fallout of the 2018 Cape Town ball-tampering saga but later said he regretted doing so.<\/p>\n

Speaking on ABC's Grandstand Cricket Podcast<\/em>, Cowan, \ufeffwho made his Test debut alongside Warner at the top of the order on Boxing Day in 2011, said a majority of cricket fans shared Johnson's thinking.<\/p>\n

"Mitch Johnson is saying what 90 per cent of people in the pub have been thinking," he said.<\/p>\n

"What I didn't love \u2014 I feel like he would have made a more pertinent argument \u2014 was the tone. There was a sense of anger or injustice to it.<\/p>\n

"But the actual points around selection, statistically David Warner probably shouldn't be in the best XI, I think most people agree with."<\/p>\n

Warner's form with the bat has been heavily scrutinised for the better part of three years after achieving a half-century on only two occasions in his last 16 Test innings.<\/p>\n

The 37-year-old has previously outlined his desire to finish with a home Test in Sydney, which could be spoiled if the veteran fails to fire in the first Test against Pakistan starting Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

Cameron Bancroft<\/a>, Marcus Harris and Matt Renshaw\ufeff have all made a case to replace Warner at the top of the order with their performances in the Sheffield Shield this season, with the latter also excelling against Pakistan for the Prime Minister's XI with a century<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n

\ufeffMarsh Marsh<\/a> has also been confirmed to bat at No.6 in Perth, but the all-rounder could slide up the order to succeed Warner at some point, given his top-order experience in the limited-overs formats over the last two years.<\/p>\n

That option would also allow Cameron Green<\/a> to return to the Test side.<\/p>\n

Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head have also been touted as options, which Cowan has backed.<\/p>\n

"I still think personally the best person for the job is either Marnus or Travis Head," Cowan said.<\/p>\n

"That allows you to pick your best six batters with Cameron Green and Mitch Marsh in the team batting at five and six, and it reshapes the team.<\/p>\n

"I don't think Travis Head would be that keen on that, but what it does allow is Steve Smith to bat at three, Travis at four and then your two all-rounders.<\/p>\n

"With Marnus opening the batting, he's walking out at one for none anyway. David Warner has been a walking wicket for two years now.<\/p>\n

"At least he knows when he's going to bat, he can prepare and go out and bat. It's not a big leap to go from batting at three to opening the batting."<\/p>\n
