Former Ireland<\/a> head coach Joe Schmidt has reportedly entered the frame as a potential pick for the top Wallabies<\/a> job.<\/p>\n

The Sydney Morning Herald<\/em><\/a> reports Rugby Australia<\/a> is close to signing Peter Horne as its new director of head of high performance, who is close with Schmidt.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Rugby Australia CEO Phil Waugh confirmed the governing body wasn't far from securing a new head of high performance and would look to secure a Wallabies head coach shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n

The report reveals other candidates for the role included ex-Australian sevens coach and current Harlequins spearhead Billy Millard, ex-Wallabies captain James Horwill, and Rugby Union Players' Association boss Justin Harrison.<\/p>\n

An announcement confirming Horne's appointment could come as soon as next week. The Sydney-born administrator is the most senior figure in World Rugby's high-performance department as the director, a position he's held since 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Horne will play a significant part in the appointment of the next Wallabies head coach alongside new chairman Daniel Herbert and Waugh.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Horne and Schmidt are said to be close friends and have worked together at World Rugby across 2020 and 2021, the latter in a high performance role.<\/p>\n

Schmidt is highly credentialed having been the head coach of Ireland from 2013 to 2019. In that time he took them from bona fide battlers to world beaters.<\/p>\n

He historically led the team to its first ever win over New Zealand in 2016 and won with them again in 2018.<\/p>\n

Schmidt joined New Zealand as the All Blacks attack coach in 2022. He parted company with New Zealand Rugby after this year's Rugby World Cup.<\/p>\n
