Tennis<\/a> icon Chris Evert will be forced to miss ESPN's coverage of the Australian Open<\/a> after a recurrence of her cancer.<\/p>\n

The 68-year-old Evert was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in December of 2021, and revealed that it had returned in a statement to ESPN.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile this is a diagnosis I never wanted to hear, I once again feel fortunate that it was caught early,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoctors found cancer cells in the same pelvic region. All cells were removed, and I have begun another round of chemotherapy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evert is an 18-time grand slam singles champion. The Australian Open begins next month.<\/p>\n

While Evert will not be present at Melbourne Park, she announced her intention to be "ready for the rest of the grand slam season."<\/p>\n

"Since I was first diagnosed with cancer two years ago, I've been very open about my experience," she said.<\/p>\n

Evert is considered one of the greatest women's players in tennis history. <\/p>\n
