Oscar Piastri<\/a>'s stellar debut F1<\/a> season has been capped off by being awarded the FIA's Rookie of the Year.<\/p>\n

By beating Logan Sargeant and Nyck de Vries \u2014 the latter of which was sacked mid-season for Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> \u2014 Piastri had already clinched F1's own Rookie of the Year honours with his ninth-place finish in the driver's standings.<\/p>\n

But the FIA award covers several top-level categories. It's the second time Piastri has won the award, having also clinched it in 2021 after winning the F2 championship in his first year.<\/p>\n

"If we can start next year like we finished this season, we should be in good shape," Piastri said at the ceremony, held in Baku, Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n

"Enjoyed my rookie season in F1 a lot. Hopefully, it is the last rookie season of my career."<\/p>\n

Piastri is the first F1 driver since Alex Albon in 2019 to win the award, and the first since Charles Leclerc did it in back-to-back years in 2017-2018 to win it twice.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old from Melbourne scored 97 points in his first year in F1 and picked up two podiums in Japan (3rd) and then a week later in Qatar (2nd).<\/p>\n

He was the first rookie since Lewis Hamilton in 2007 to clinch two podiums in his maiden season.<\/p>\n

It was his weekend in Qatar that was undoubtedly his breakout in the sport. Having led his first laps in the sport and challenged Max Verstappen during the Belgium sprint race, Piastri won his first F1 race in the Qatar sprint.<\/p>\n

Piastri will begin his second full season in the sport with McLaren at the Bahrain Grand Prix on Saturday, March 2.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
