Two of the world's best racing drivers of the modern era could become teammates in years to come.<\/p>\n

Albeit, not at the pinnacle of open-wheel racing in F1<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Instead, it's the FIA World Endurance Championship and the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans where Fernando Alonso<\/a> and Max Verstappen<\/a> could team up.<\/p>\n

Alonso has won the world's most prestigious endurance race twice before with Toyota.<\/p>\n

\"Three-time<\/p>\n

The Spaniard won the 2018 and 2019 editions alongside ex-F1 drivers Sebastien Buemi of Switzerland and Japan's Kazuki Nakajima.<\/p>\n

The two-time F1 world champion has previously expressed a desire to return. However, it'll take an all-star line-up for him to do so.<\/p>\n

It's one that would have to include three-time F1 champion Verstappen, who revealed he'd spoken to Alonso about the prospect.<\/p>\n

"Le Mans I would definitely like to do," said Verstappen at Honda's Thanks Day event.<\/p>\n

\"Fernando<\/p>\n

"I've been there already when my Dad used to race at Le Mans, and the atmosphere is amazing, with so many people, driving through the night, sunrise\u2026 it's really cool."<\/p>\n

"I've been speaking to Fernando about it," he added.<\/p>\n

"He said he would only want to do it again with me. That would really be cool.<\/p>\n

"The only thing at Le Mans is there is not really a minimum weight for the driver, and I'm quite a heavy driver, so need to find light teammates to compensate.<\/p>\n

"But Fernando is quite light, so it would be quite good, but then I need to find another one, so I need to have a look."<\/p>\n

\"Max<\/p>\n

It's unlikely such a combination will come any time soon though.<\/p>\n

Verstappen is currently contracted on a seven-year deal through to 2028.<\/p>\n

Alonso's contract runs through to the end of 2024. He'll be 47 by the time Verstappen's current deal expires.<\/p>\n

It's not inconceivable that the pair join forces while still active in F1, although it would seem a stretch given the ever-expanding calendar.<\/p>\n

Next year's 24 Hours of Le Mans takes place on June 15-16 between the Spanish and Austrian grands prix.<\/p>\n

Alonso was the last active F1 driver to contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans, doing so in 2018.<\/p>\n

Prior to that, Nico Hulkenberg took victory with New Zealand's Earl Bamber and Nick Tandy of the United Kingdom in 2015 with Porsche.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
