Adam Scott<\/a> has cut a dejected figure after blowing a chance at a come-from-behind Australian Open<\/a> victory.<\/p>\n

Starting his final round on the back nine at The Australian at eight-under, the veteran great was five shots behind the leaders.<\/p>\n

But a stunning three-under back nine had him only two strokes behind when he made the turn.<\/p>\n

Birdies at the third and fourth put him into a share of the lead, before another birdie at the sixth put him into the outright lead.<\/p>\n

But with his next shot from the tee on the par-4 seventh, Scott hit it way left and the ball ended up at the bottom of the fence that lines the practice fairway.<\/p>\n

Although the ball was inside the fence, the ruling was made it was out-of-bounds, due to it sitting inside the edge of the poles supporting the net.<\/p>\n

Scott had hit a provisional ball off the tee, but it was in thick rough and he could only punch it down the fairway.<\/p>\n

His approach left him with a difficult putt which he was unable to make, and he tapped in for a seven.<\/p>\n

Speaking after his round, Scott said his tee shot on the seventh was "just a bad swing".<\/p>\n

"It's tough out there – it was even tough early but it got tougher," he said.<\/p>\n

"I was making a lot of birdies, had a couple of bogeys, then unfortunately just a bad swing on the worst hole to do it probably.<\/p>\n

"I paid the ultimate price there.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's a shame, because it would've been great to have a really special round and maybe have a chance sitting in the clubhouse."<\/p>\n

Scott finished his round with pars on his final two holes, to finish the tournament at 11-under.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
