Australia's quest to end a two-decade Davis Cup<\/a> drought will carry on for another year, downed by Italy in the final in Malaga.<\/p>\n

In their second successive final, Alexei Popyrin<\/a> and Alex de Minaur<\/a> lost their singles rubbers to give the Italians a 2-0 victory \u2013 their first Davis Cup success since 1976.<\/p>\n

Popyrin was first to play when he took on Matteo Arnaldi, but lost in three sets 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.<\/p>\n

De Minaur then had the unenviable task of taking on a red hot Jannik Sinner<\/a>, fresh off his second defeat of Novak Djokovic<\/a> in as many weeks in the semi-final on Saturday morning (AEDT)<\/a>, and went down in two 6-3, 6-0.<\/p>\n

The Italians had lost the last three finals it played against Australia, which was last year's runner-up to Canada.<\/p>\n

"It has been an incredible feeling I think for all of us and obviously we are really happy," Sinner said.<\/p>\n

"We kept everything together and obviously yesterday we went from one point away from being out and now we can celebrate the win. I think we can all be very, very happy."<\/p>\n

Sinner has now won 20 of 22 matches since the end of the US Open<\/a>, and finishes the season with a 64-15 record.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Popyrin was unable to convert any of his eight break point chances in the third set against Arnaldi, and converted just three of his 16 for the whole match.<\/p>\n

He sent down 12 aces and gave away just three double faults to the Italian's nine.<\/p>\n

But the missed break point chances proved the difference – the pair had the same number of winners (35), even sharing the same split between forehand (22) and backhand winners (13).<\/p>\n

"Now I have won one of the most important matches in my life \u2013 I don't know what to say."<\/p>\n

Captain Filippo Volandri, in his second year in charge thanked the crowd \u2013 which was unsurprisingly overwhelmingly Italian \u2013 for their support.<\/p>\n
