After inspiring the Kiwis to a Pacific Championships \ufeffvictory over Australia<\/a>, Michael Maguire<\/a> has quit from his role as coach.<\/p>\n

The New Zealand Rugby League confirmed the news in a statement as it now appears likely Maguire \ufeffwill take over as NSW Blues<\/a> coach in State of Origin after Brad Fittler's exit earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Maguire won 12 of his 18 Test matches in charge of the Kiwis, which included a semi-final appearance at the World Cup. \ufeff<\/p>\n

NZRL chief executive Greg Peters paid tribute to Maguire in a statement released on Friday.<\/p>\n

"The mana, history and whakapapa associated with the black and white jersey mean any role in and around the Kiwi team is the ultimate privilege. Michael's dedication to the role and players has seen him achieve incredible things over the last six years," he said.<\/p>\n

"Michael is the ultimate professional and has connected deeply with the NZRL wh\u0101nau and playing group. We wish him nothing but success in his next career step."<\/p>\n

Maguire has been heavily linked with the NSW Blues coaching role<\/a> after Brad Fittler<\/a> stepped down.<\/p>\n

His reported interest in the role wasn't well received by a host of former New Zealand players with legend Tony Kemp previously expressing his frustration<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"We should never have an Australian coaching the Kiwis and then allowed to take an Aussie job such as Origin," Kemp told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

With speculation rife around his position during the Pacific Championships, Maguire had previously \ufeffsignalled his intent to stay in the role.<\/p>\n
