Australia<\/a> has fought back from the brink of elimination to keep their Davis Cup<\/a> charge going with Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell leading Australia to a 2-1 win over Czech Republic in the deciding doubles tie after an Alex de Minaur rescue mission.<\/p>\n

Ebden and Purcell won in straight sets 6-4, 7-5\ufeff over Jiri Lehecka and Adam Pavlasek to give the Aussies what seemed to be an unlikely win after Tomas Machac beat Jordan Thompson 6-4, 7-5 in the opening singles clash to give the Czechs a 1-0 lead, then de Minaur dropped the first set of the crucial second rubber.<\/p>\n

With a fired up Lleyton Hewitt urging him on from the side of the court, de Minaur hit his stride after succumbing in the first set to Jiri Lehecka 4-6, with the world No.12 pulling himself out of a second set tiebreak (7-2), then clinching a tight third set 7-5 to put the tie in the hands of Australia's top doubles pair.<\/p>\n

It was just the latest in what is becoming a catalogue of tough Davis Cup wins from a man who shapes his game in the image of his mentor, Hewitt.<\/p>\n

Australian Open quarter-finalist Lehecka's serve caused problems for de Minaur in the opening set, even though the Aussie had his fair share of break point opportunities in the tenth game.<\/p>\n

De Minaur rallied in the second and then saved break points to stop Lehecka taking a 4-2 lead in the third, before finding the decisive break to win 7-5.<\/p>\n

"It's been a very long year, right? I think it would have been quite easy for me to roll over under the circumstances, but that's just not the type of player I am. I'm always going to fight until the end," de Minaur said after the two-hour and 32-minute battle.<\/p>\n

"I kind of got a little sniff. I was able to kind of play a solid game there (trailing 4-5 in the second set), and after that, I felt like the whole momentum kind of changed."<\/p>\n

Australia will now play Finland in the semi-finals. It is the first time the Aussies have advanced to back-to-back Davis Cup semi finals in 22 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
