St George Illawarra Dragons<\/a> NRLW coach Jamie Soward<\/a> has come out in support of Jackson Hastings<\/a>' radical idea to introduce names to players' jerseys.<\/p>\n

In September, Hastings tweeted his thoughts that the NRL should consider putting surnames on the back of jerseys, stating the sight of it when playing in the Super League "hit different".<\/p>\n

This week the Knights halfback doubled down, calling for the NRL to adopt it and Soward agrees it's time. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"(Hastings) is spot on. Squad numbers with names on the back is how we all dreamed of having that," he posted on X.<\/p>\n

"Seeing fans with your name on their back is cool.<\/p>\n

"Why do we run down ideas that can make our product better?<\/p>\n

"Lose the old man 'get off my lawn' mentality."<\/p>\n

\ufeffWhile Hastings' opinion has received support, the 27-year-old did reveal there'd been people hitting back at him, who prefer the current system.<\/p>\n

"I got hammered on a tweet about it, all the traditionalists came after me," Hastings told SEN radio this week.<\/p>\n

"I'm all for tradition as well, there's nothing better than following a tradition or someone that played in the seven jersey.<\/p>\n

"But the way that the world is going and the Americanisation of sport, the way pretty much every sport in the world besides us do it.<\/p>\n

"Playing in the Super League, I took immense pride in the number I wore and certainly having my last name on the back of my jersey."<\/p>\n

Rugby league and rugby union are two of the few remaining sports that use jersey numbers to signify positions on the field.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The NRL currently dictates each club must name a 1-21 line-up each week, with the top 17 in that list named as being in the actual team, in their positions.\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
