Australian-born Canadian trans cricketer Danielle McGahey\ufeff<\/a> expressed disappointment over the ICC's decision to ban transgender women from playing international women's cricket<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The International Cricket Council said the \u201cnew gender eligibility regulation", which was approved by board members, had been imposed to protect the integrity of women's cricket and was also made on safety grounds.<\/p>\n

\u201cMale-to-female participants who have undergone male puberty will not be eligible to compete in the international women\u2019s game,\u201d the ICC said.<\/p>\n

It added that the regulations would apply \u201cirrespective of any surgical or gender reassignment treatment" players may have undertaken.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe changes to the gender eligibility regulations resulted from an extensive consultation process and are founded in science, aligning with the core principles developed during the review," ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice said. \u201cInclusivity is incredibly important to us as a sport, but our priority was to protect the integrity of the international women\u2019s game and the safety of players.\u201d<\/p>\n

McGahey became the first transgender cricketer to take part in an official international match for Canada in September.<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old Australian-born opening batter moved to Canada in February 2020 and began transitioning medically in May, 2021.<\/p>\n

"Following the ICC's decision this morning, it is with a very heavy heart that I must say that my international cricketing career is over. As quickly as it begun, it must now end," McGahey wrote.<\/p>\n

"While I hold my opinions on the ICC's decision, they are irrelevant. What matters is the message being sent to millions of trans women today, a messaging say that we don't belong.<\/p>\n

"I promise I will not stop fighting for equality for us in our sport, we deserve the right to play cricket at the highest level, we are not a threat to the integrity or safety of the sport. Never stop fighting!"<\/p>\n

The ICC said the rules would be revisited within two years to \u201calign with the sport\u2019s evolving landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n

Decisions to allow transgender women play at domestic level will be made by individual member boards, the body said.<\/p>\n
