Cricket greats Michael Vaughan and Mark Waugh have blasted the Chennai pitch on which England crashed to 134 all out in the second Test against India<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After India had posted a first-innings total of 329, England were skittled for the lowest score at MA Chidambaram Stadium since 1977.<\/p>\n

But although it's easy to see a scorecard like that and assume the Poms' batting was horrendous on the second day of the Test, the comments of Vaughan and Waugh suggest it was in fact the pitch that was appalling.<\/p>\n

"It's entertaining cricket as things are happening all the time but let's be honest this Pitch is a shocker," Vaughan tweeted.<\/p>\n

"Not making any excuses as India have been better but this isn't a Test Match 5 day prepared Pitch.<\/p>\n

"India been better in all aspects .. But the pitch hasn't been the same from Ball one !!! It's fine to produce whatever you want at home to gain advantage .. But this pitch for a 5 day Test match is a stinker .. but if I was India I would have done the same."<\/p>\n

Waugh delivered a roasting of his own.<\/p>\n

"I'm all for a good contest between bat and ball in test match cricket but this pitch in Chennai is unacceptable at test match level," Waugh tweeted.<\/p>\n

"You can't have the ball going through the top of the surface on day 1 from the main part of the pitch. Ie not from the footmarks."<\/p>\n

England were 5-52 when star all-rounder Ben Stokes was dismissed for 18 runs, and the visitors would've been rolled for a much lower total than 134 if wicketkeeper Ben Foakes hadn't dug in for a gutsy 42 runs off 107 balls.<\/p>\n

But former England captain Michael Atherton expressed a different view to those of Vaughan and Waugh, saying the Poms had been outplayed and the wicket had served up gremlins for both sides.<\/p>\n

"Reality bites, as have India's spinners. Pant, Ashwin and Foakes outstanding today," Atherton tweeted.<\/p>\n

"Pitch very tricky but worth repeating point made y'day, it has been very tricky from the start. Toss not decisive."<\/p>\n

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was India's chief destroyer on his way to 5-43 from 23.5 overs.<\/p>\n

Ashwin's five-for saw him become the second-highest Test wicket-taker on Indian soil, with the 76-Test veteran surging past former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh.<\/p>\n

Legendary India leg-spinner Anil Kumble leads the way on 350 wickets, while Ashwin has bagged 268 and Singh 265.<\/p>\n
