When reigning Australian Open<\/a> champion Sofia Kenin<\/a> crashed in the second round on Thursday, she headed to the Phillip Island Trophy as a hot chance to pocket a consolation prize.<\/p>\n

But the American's nightmare trip to Australia would only become even more wretched.<\/p>\n

Kenin, the world No.4, was today knocked out of the Phillip Island Trophy by unseeded Australian Olivia Gadecki in the second round, plummeting to a 6-2 6-7 (4-7) 4-6 defeat.<\/p>\n

Gadecki was not named in the latest release of the WTA rankings, which lists almost 1400 women, and has a career-best ranking of just 988.<\/p>\n

\"Kenin<\/p>\n

The 18-year-old made her WTA tour main-draw debut last week, when she was handed a wildcard into the Gippsland Trophy.<\/p>\n

Kenin's Australian Open defence ended when she suffered a 6-3 6-2 loss to Estonian Kaia Kanepi at Margaret Court Arena.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old found the loss so hard to stomach she broke down in tears in her post-match press conference.<\/p>\n

"I guess it's the outside pressure," Kenin said while wiping away tears and taking deep breaths.<\/p>\n

"I felt really nervous. I haven't felt my game for, like, I don't know how long, but I haven't really felt my game so well, even in my first round.<\/p>\n

"Since last year, like, I won, then obviously I feel like everyone is kind of expecting me to do that. It's obviously tough.<\/p>\n

"Everyone was always asking me, 'Would you want to? Do you see yourself getting there and winning again?' Obviously I said 'yes', (but) with the way I'm playing, no."<\/p>\n

\"Kenin<\/p>\n

Kenin had also lost in the quarter-finals of the Yarra Valley Classic, meaning the WTA's 2020 player of the year won just three matches in three events on her trip to Australia.<\/p>\n

But while Kenin is heartbroken, an ecstatic Gadecki is reveling in her grandest career victory.<\/p>\n

The Queenslander is now set to face either Swede Rebecca Peterson or Belgian Greet Minnen in the last 16.<\/p>\n
