South African rugby<\/a> has been rocked after its headquarters was broken into by a pair of thieves who came within touching distance of a World Cup<\/a> trophy before stealing other items instead.<\/p>\n

CCTV from the headquarters in Cape Town shows the pair of thieves rummaging through different rooms in the building before one of them grips the trophy before walking away.<\/p>\n

A South Africa Rugby Union spokesperson told the BBC, the trophy was a memorial one, and not the World Cup trophy won last month in France<\/a>, with that one locked away in a safe. \ufeff<\/p>\n

The thieves left all the trophies in the building behind, instead getting away with \ufeffwhisky, five signed Springbok jerseys and eight laptops, along with items from other offices.<\/p>\n

South African columnist Luke Menezies called it a "brazen act" from the two thieves.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"This event has sent shockwaves through the rugby community, reminding us of the significance of safeguarding our national symbols," he wrote in The South African<\/em> newspaper.<\/p>\n

"The break-in at the South African Rugby Union's headquarters raises major concerns about the security of our nation's valued sports memorabilia. Fortunately, the Rugby World Cup trophy, a symbol of national pride and achievement, was spared from this audacious theft.<\/p>\n

"The trophy, which stands as a testament to the Springboks' triumphant 2019 and 2023 RWC campaign, continues to inspire players and fans alike.<\/p>\n
