Few players will start 2024 under more pressure than South Sydney<\/a>'s superstar recruit Jack Wighton<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Rabbitohs were a bitter disappointment in the second half of last season and have put all their eggs in Wighton's basket – he's the only big name buy the club has made.<\/p>\n

For a team to go from leading the competition after 12 rounds to missing the finals is an unmitigated disaster and hopefully Souths have done some serious soul searching in their end-of-season review.<\/p>\n

Match-winning backs Latrell Mitchell<\/a> and Cody Walker had moments of brilliance during the year but also let the team down through poor discipline at times and that needs to be addressed.<\/p>\n

Wighton can play just about anywhere in the backline but is likely to be slotted into the centres at his new club – to start at least.<\/p>\n

Former Manly forward Sean Keppie also comes in and he will add depth and experience to the pack.<\/p>\n

Halfback Lachlan Ilias has potential but couldn't maintain his form over a long season in 2023 and with Blake Taaffe gone to the Bulldogs, it's vital he has a big year to steer the Rabbitohs back into the finals.<\/p>\n

Coach Jason Demetriou has a solid defence to build his match plans around – the Rabbitohs conceded the least line breaks in 2023 and had least missed tackles.<\/p>\n

So the attack is clearly the area that needs improving – and that's where Wighton comes in.<\/p>\n

South Sydney's pack is as strong as any in the comp and if Damien Cook can get them going forward out of dummy-half, they should make up for last season's fadeaway and bring back the good times.<\/p>\n
