The International Cricket Council<\/a> has responded to controversy \ufeffaround the pitch being used for India's clash with New Zealand<\/a> in the World Cup<\/a> semi-final.<\/p>\n

Hours before the fixture began, reports revealed that the pitch had been switched from pitch seven, which hadn't been used, to pitch six, which had staged two matches.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe Indian Express<\/em> had reported that Indian officials asked curators to shave off grass from the surface, in the hopes of delivering a slow pitch.<\/p>\n

\ufeffAn email published in The Daily Mail<\/em><\/a> from the ICC's independent pitch consultant, Andy Atkinson,\ufeff raised doubts about the neutrality of the pitch.<\/p>\n

"As a result of these actions, one must speculate if this will be the first ever ICC CWC [World Cup] final to have a pitch which has been specifically chosen and prepared to their stipulation at the request of the team management and\/or the hierarchy of the home nation board," he wrote.<\/p>\n

But the ICC itself played down the concerns.<\/p>\n

"Changes to planned pitch rotations are common towards the end of an event of this length, and has already happened a couple of times," an ICC spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

"This change was made on the recommendation of the venue curator in conjunction with our host.<\/p>\n

"The ICC independent pitch consultant was apprised of the change and has no reason to believe the pitch won't play well."<\/p>\n

SEN presenter Gerard Whateley described it as "outrageous" and "brazen" while cricket legends Michael Vaughan<\/a> and Damien Martyn also expressed their disapproval on social media.<\/p>\n

"A World Cup semi should be played on a fresh pitch … it's as simple as that," Vaughan posted on X.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Australian captain Pat Cummins spoke to reporters ahead of his side's clash with South Africa about the pitch issue but wasn't too fazed.<\/p>\n

"Obviously the ICC has an independent pitch curator who manages that," he said.<\/p>\n

"I'm sure they're all over making sure it's fair for both teams.<\/p>\n
