Latrell Mitchell<\/a> has revealed why he was a no-show at the Dally M Medal<\/a> night despite winning a coveted award.<\/p>\n

The South Sydney<\/a> fullback won the Ken Stephen Medal, which goes to a player for their work in the community, rather than feats on a football field.<\/p>\n

\ufeffMitchell spends countless hours giving back to regional Indigenous communities and helping children who may need a leg up in life.<\/p>\n

But he wasn't overly interested in accepting an NRL<\/a> invite to attend the red-carpet affair in Sydney, and has now explained why he snubbed the event.<\/p>\n

"A lot of things I do are off camera… that's not what it's about, it's about being genuine," Mitchell told the Let's Trot<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n

"I didn't not show up out of spite, I just didn't want to go there because I didn't feel like I was doing it for that, an award.<\/p>\n

"I didn't see the point of getting up and getting an award… that's not what I do it for, I do it for smiles for the kids.<\/p>\n

"If I can change a kid's life one day then that's my job, that's my reward.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

While Mitchell appears in media headlines arguably more than any other NRL player, he endured a particularly negative run at the end of the 2023 season.<\/p>\n

Reports surfaced of he and Rabbitohs teammate Cody Walker receiving special treatment<\/a> at the club, leading to assistant coach Sam Burgess suddenly leaving.<\/p>\n

That led to the son of South Sydney great Clive Churchill publicly lambasting Mitchell<\/a>, which resulted in the former being stripped of his regular grand final day medal honours.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Mitchell was then accused of snubbing a young fan's photo request at a junior football event<\/a> in Sydney's west, although the man's claim on 2GB radio was largely ridiculed afterwards\ufeff and Mitchell labelled him an "idiot".<\/p>\n

Then the superstar was questioned for his appearance at the Koori Knockout<\/a>, after withdrawing himself from Kangaroos selection.<\/p>\n

While Mitchell says his Dally M snub had nothing to do with spite, the public pile-on does appear to be wearing thin for the two-time premiership winner.<\/p>\n

"You look at the comments section when Latrell Mitchell is involved and it's like 1500 comments – it's just a rodeo, my life," Mitchell told the podcast.<\/p>\n

"All I've ever done is come out and outline what happens in my community, being a black person, I'm being me and that's all I've ever done.<\/p>\n
