Kane Cornes<\/a> has questioned the merits of Richmond and Dustin Martin<\/a> opening contract extension talks, suggesting both parties would be better served to wait.<\/p>\n

Cornes' comments come amid reports that Richmond and Martin's management have discussed the prospect of extending the star's deal beyond it's current expiry in 2024.<\/p>\n

\ufeffNews of a potential Martin extension comes amid rumours linking him with a move to the Gold Coast, where he could potentially be reunited with former Richmond coach Damien Hardwick<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"It's just a bit early for both (club and player), Cornes said on SEN.<\/p>\n

\"MELBOURNE,<\/p>\n

"If I was Dustin Martin, I'd just be happy to wait perhaps till mid-year.<\/p>\n

"I don't know him, but he feels like the player who's not going to be motivated playing in a team that's losing a lot and that's where I think Richmond are going to be.<\/p>\n

"I could be completely wrong on that \u2026 but that's why I would wait."<\/p>\n

Cornes suggested losing Martin would not be the worst result for Richmond either.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"I don't think there's much risk in going again with Dustin Martin. But what if you could get a good draft pick for him?" he asked.<\/p>\n

"What if you could clear up some space? What if you did need a bit of a reset?<\/p>\n

"I just think to do it now before the season has started would be a bit premature.<\/p>\n

"I'm on the fence here. I'm not calling it one way or the other than to say I'd just put it on the back burner if I was Dustin and I'd put it on the back burner perhaps until around round 11 or 12 if I were the Tigers."<\/p>\n

Despite links with the Gold Coast, Richmond has always remained adamant that Martin would stay with the club.<\/p>\n
