World record-breaking superstar Kaylee McKeown<\/a> has laid down an ambitious plan for Paris 2024, with the Aussie set to add the medley to a full backstroke program, while lowering one of her backstroke world records to an almost unthinkable new mark.<\/p>\n

Last month, McKeown broke two world records over two days at World Aquatics' World Cup event in Budapest to become the first woman to own all three backstroke records in long-course swimming<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old first sent the 50m record tumbling<\/a> after touching the wall in a time of 26.86 to smash Liu Xiang's record of five years.<\/p>\n

The next day, she \ufeffbettered her own mark of 57.45 in the 100m event<\/a>, which she previously set at the 2021 Australian Olympic Trials, by 0.12 seconds.<\/p>\n

The two records added to her unbeaten time of 2:03.14 across 200m which she clocked last March at the New South Wales State Championships.<\/p>\n

Asked just how fast she could go, McKeown said it was a matter of hard discipline and performing on the biggest stages.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI wish I had a crystal ball to tell you in advance but it's a matter of training hard and then trying to put that together on race day," she told Nine's Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"It is hard to \ufeffput it all together to make the perfect race, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't."<\/p>\n

\ufeffSwimming an incredible 57.33 in the 100m final in Hungary, McKeown was hopeful she could become the first woman to go under 57 seconds.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI'm training to better myself every day and if that means cracking 57 [seconds] and becoming the first female to go 56, that would be unreal," she said.<\/p>\n

"But I'm also aware that there are \ufeffother phenomenal backstrokers in the world at the moment who are also chasing that."<\/p>\n

McKeown also holds the fourth fastest time in the 200m medley this year behind those of Canadian teen Summer McIntosh and American Kate Douglass<\/p>\n

Four days out from the heats at Tokyo 2020, \ufeffMcKeown withdrew from the 200m individual medley to focus on her backstroke races and relays. However, in Paris, she is planning to juggle both events.<\/p>\n

"I will be \ufefflooking at pursuing [the medley in my Olympic program] and seeing what I can do," she said.<\/p>\n

"Everything that I've done \ufeffsince the last Olympics<\/a>, I've been trying to put myself in harm's way and trying to learn how to swim medley and backstroke at an international competition.<\/p>\n

"It's not easy\ufeff, especially when you've got double-ups within a session."<\/p>\n

Contesting her second Olympic Games in Paris, \ufeffMcKeown will be gunning for back-to-back gold medals in the 100m and 200m backstroke events. She also holds the world records in both categories. \ufeff<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe 50m backstroke event is not contested at the Olympics.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffUltimately, I'm going to the Olympics because I want to go to the Olympics. It's a dream that I've had and being at my second Olympics, it doesn't matter if I miss a final or if I [just] make a semi final," McKeown said.<\/p>\n

"As long as I'm there representing my country I'll be happy.<\/p>\n

"There's only as much pressure as you \ufeffput on yourself. I do the best that I can to blackout outside noise.<\/p>\n

"At the end of the day if I don't do what I have to do in the pool then my successes in competition don't come to fruition, so it's a matter of believing in myself."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
