Australia<\/a>'s hopes of qualifying for the Cricket World Cup<\/a> final may be dashed by wild weather around Kolkata.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the India Meteorological Department warned a "cyclonic circulation"\ufeff had entered the south Andaman Sea from the Gulf of Thailand.<\/p>\n

"Under the influence of this system, a low pressure is likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal by Tuesday," the department said on Monday.<\/p>\n

The weather system has potential to develop into cyclonic conditions, and is headed towards the Kolkata \ufeffregion, where Thursday's semi-final between Australia and South Africa will be played.<\/p>\n

Kolkata's forecast as of Tuesday morning (AEDT) suggested a 60 per cent chance of rain on Thursday, which increases to 90 per cent on Friday.<\/p>\n

If Thursday's match is washed out the World Cup reserve day is Friday – which looks like being worse.<\/p>\n

And if the semi-final can't be played, South Africa will qualify for the final and the Aussies will be out, given they finished second and third respectively in the standings.<\/p>\n

South Africa has never made it to a World Cup final, but has the wood on Australia at this tournament thanks to a \ufeff134-run victory in the group stages.<\/p>\n

But the Aussies have since won seven games straight, and fast bowler Mitchell Starc believes they know how to beat the Proteas this time.<\/p>\n

"Probably both teams have kept a close eye on each other and from a few games back we knew we're probably going to face each other in the semi-finals," Starc told media on Monday.<\/p>\n

"Whether they feel differently, it's obviously been spoken about outside of their group.<\/p>\n

"I don't know whether there's any inside (talk from South Africa), but we've had past players talk about it.\ufeff"<\/p>\n
