Supercars<\/a> has released its calendar for the 2024 season, all but confirming the demise of an iconic endurance race.<\/p>\n

The Sandown 500 looks likely to be held for the final time next year.<\/p>\n

With news of the calendar came confirmation that The Bend Motorsport Park will return in 2025 after a one-year hiatus.<\/p>\n

The return of The Bend will be as an endurance race, all but sealing Sandown's fate beyond next year.<\/p>\n

The Sandown 500 has been an on-and-off item on the Supercars calendar owing to a raft of issues. This year, the race returned for the first time since 2019.<\/p>\n

The Sandown 500 remains one of the longest-standing endurance races in Australia having been first held in 1964 as a six-hour production car race.<\/p>\n

Next year marks the 60th anniversary of the event.<\/p>\n

There's been plenty of speculation surrounding the future of the Sandown circuit in Melbourne's south-east.<\/p>\n

Plans have been in the works for years to have the site redeveloped into a housing estate. That has yet to be formalised but is a known threat to the venue.<\/p>\n

For The Bend, it's the second instance in which it has been slated to host an endurance event. <\/p>\n

In 2020, plans were hatched for a 500km race at the circuit east of Adelaide, only for the COVID-19 pandemic to scupper that event.<\/p>\n

As has been widely reported, the 2023 Supercars season will open at Mount Panorama with a two-race, 500km event on February 23-25.<\/p>\n

The series heads to Albert Park to play support to the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix on March 21-24.<\/p>\n

Supercars returns to New Zealand after a one-year absence. Pukekohe has been replaced by Taup\u014d on April 19-21.<\/p>\n

Supercars heads to Perth on May 17-19, Darwin on June 14-16, and then Townsville on July 5-7 before its sole night race in Sydney on July 19-21.<\/p>\n

Tasmania moves to the middle of the year with an August 16-18 event, acting as the precursor to the Sandown 500 on September 20-22.<\/p>\n

The Bathurst 1000 has been confirmed for October 10-13.<\/p>\n

The penultimate round takes place on the streets of the Gold Coast on October 25-27 before the season finale in Adelaide on November 14-17.<\/p>\n

Supercars will introduce a new format with a pair of 60-minute races at Perth, Darwin, and Tasmania.<\/p>\n

Supercars' Super400 format will feature dual 200km races in Taupo and Sydney.<\/p>\n

Albert Park will feature four 100km races.<\/p>\n
