John Millman<\/a> has revealed that this summer's Australian Open<\/a> will be the last of his career.<\/p>\n

The \ufeff34-year-old is set to go around for his final season of tennis in 2024, forced into a premature retirement due to persistent injuries.<\/p>\n

Millman, currently ranked No.436, confirmed he would partake in the United Cup<\/a> and then hope to qualify for the Australian Open.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately age has caught up to me. The body is really broken down," he told 9News Queensland.<\/p>\n

"It's been a fantastic career, but I'm ready to try something else."<\/p>\n

Millman called the decision to retire "really difficult" as he reflected on his 2023 campaign, which has been ruined by injuries. After making the second round at the Australian Open, Millman was sidelined at both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon.<\/p>\n

"I think at the end of every year you kind of assess where you're at mentally and physically," he said.<\/p>\n

"At the end of last year and (after) having quite an encouraging Australian Open summer series, I was ready to go again, but one back injury after another has really halted my progression this season.<\/p>\n

"For me, the way I play, I have to be up there playing 11 months a year and I'm just no longer able to do so.<\/p>\n

"I can still play at a high level I feel, but not day-in, day-out, the body is not letting me.<\/p>\n

"All those years of being physical on the court has caught up with me.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Millman labelled the nagging injuries he's dealt with as "the most frustrating thing" about his career, which began when he turned pro in \ufeff2006.<\/p>\n

"Maybe that's the curse of being a professional athlete – you always have belief in yourself," he said.<\/p>\n

"That's one of the things I learnt early on – you have to have that belief in yourself to succeed.<\/p>\n

"I still feel as if my level is top-100, it's just week-in, week-out, I wasn't able to do that with my body.<\/p>\n

"Some chronic injuries have built up over time and that's been the most frustrating thing, knowing my level is good enough, but the body has to be co-operating.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

The Brisbane native was renowned for his toughness and never-say-die attitude, famously beating the then-world No.1 Roger Federer<\/a> at the 2018 US Open in a gruelling five-setter.<\/p>\n

He credited his parents for his fighting mentality and said he hopes his legacy will be that of someone who always fought.<\/p>\n

"I \ufeffcome from humble beginnings, a humble background, a hard-working family, and I hope that's what I showed on the court. Someone who could walk off and know that he gave absolutely everything.<\/p>\n

"Hopefully I represent those types of people too because I wasn't some amazing junior, a lot of people didn't really tout me to have any type of career in tennis, but I worked at it.<\/p>\n
