Melbourne<\/a> defender Steven May<\/a> has doubled down on his belief that the Demons should've beaten Collingwood<\/a> to the 2023 premiership\ufeff.<\/p>\n

May caused a stir when footage from Melbourne's best and fairest ceremony emerged<\/a> showing him saying, "We should've smoked them", when referencing the Magpies.<\/p>\n

When asked about it a month later, the star defender refused to back away from his comments.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI\ufeff think maybe I was speaking in an intimate setting," he said.<\/p>\n

\"Steven<\/p>\n

"It was more, in my opinion, I thought we had a team that could match up well with Collingwood, and maybe if we played them (in the grand final) who knows.<\/p>\n

"If you asked Lachie Neale who he thought was the best he'd probably say Brisbane, and if you'd ask any of the other finalists (they'd say their own teams).<\/p>\n

"You want to have that belief."<\/p>\n

May's comments come amid a nightmare off-season for Melbourne, with questions being asked of the team's culture following controversies surrounding Clayton Oliver and Joel Smith.<\/p>\n

Melbourne captain Max Gawn admitted the summer had been a "challenging" one so far for both he and his club.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIt's been relatively challenging, especially the first three or four weeks," he said.<\/p>\n
