The peak body of Australian pathologists says children should be limited to low – or no-contact sport, urging the federal government to adopt recommendations of a Senate inquiry into sports-related brain trauma<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a historic move for this country, the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia released a statement on Wednesday outlining their position on the link between chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and head trauma and concussion.<\/p>\n

It's the first time a medical college in Australia has officially stated its view on the causal link between repeated head trauma and CTE.<\/p>\n

Popular Australian sports people\ufeff including AFL great Graham "Polly" Farmer, former NRL premiership-winning coach Paul Green<\/a> and AFLW player Heather Anderson, were all diagnosed with the condition, which can only be found during an autopsy.<\/p>\n

Australian Sports Brain Bank founding director associate professor Michael Buckland said the Senate inquiry into the problem that recommended the government play a stronger role in monitoring and regulating head trauma in sport, was spot on.<\/p>\n

The enquiry found that children under 14 should only participate in low – or no- contact versions of sports, because the longer they play contact sports, the greater chance of developing the disease.<\/p>\n

The college is also pushing for head trauma and sporting history to be included in routine medical records taken by GPs, neurologists, psychiatrists and other specialists.<\/p>\n

"We've got more amateur CTE cases than professional [sportspeople] now, and we've had the youngest case of someone who was 20," Buckland said. "We have no idea how big the problem is. We haven't yet touched the bottom."<\/p>\n

Buckland examined the brain \ufeffof former AFL player Shane Tuck, who died by suicide in 2020, and discovered the most severe case he had seen since the launch of the brain bank in 2018.<\/p>\n

Tuck's sister Renee told The Age<\/a> his brain had deteriorated so much that he was hearing voices in his head.<\/p>\n

"Shane was the biggest, strongest, mentally strong bloke that I've ever known, and he ended up killing himself because his brain was just toasted," she said.<\/p>\n

"I don't want anyone to ever have to go through that."<\/p>\n
