Former England<\/a> captain Eoin Morgan<\/a> has called on the team's current leaders to "front up" after bizarrely snubbing a press conference this week.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThose comments came just before seeing veteran England batter Joe Root<\/a> get "nutmegged", which left Morgan and his fellow commentators laughing.<\/p>\n

England – who hold the ODI World Cup<\/a>\ufeff after winning it in 2019 – are out of the semi-finals running thanks to losing six of eight games to date. Their spot in the Champions Trophy is also in danger, and they now need to beat Pakistan in the last game of the Cup to qualify.<\/p>\n

Bowling legend Stuart Broad this week implored the ECB to stick fat with short-form coach Matthew Mott and captain Jos Buttler.<\/p>\n

But Morgan's eyebrows were raised when it was \ufeffassistant coach Carl Hopkinson who fronted for a routine media conference ahead of their game against the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

Typically it is the team captain – or, failing that, a senior player – who\ufeff would conduct that press conference.<\/p>\n

"I was very surprised and shocked by it," Morgan told Sky Sports of seeing Hopkinson speak.<\/p>\n

"Bear in mind the thought process that goes behind it, you sit in meetings as a leader, a captain or a head coach.<\/p>\n

"You make those decisions in the side. When things are going wrong, you need absolute clarity and direction. You have to front up.<\/p>\n

"At the moment it's a sinking ship and you need people to take responsibility."<\/p>\n

Mott previously coached Australia's champion women's team to great success, while Buttler's own record had been \ufeffsolid until this tournament.<\/p>\n

He says he has no intention of relinquishing the role, and plans to lead the team to the \ufeffCaribbean on its next tour.<\/p>\n

"I'd like to," Buttler said.<\/p>\n

\"Stokes<\/p>\n

"I know Rob Key arrives in India today. We can have some good conversations with him and the coach and everyone, and make a plan for that tour. But yeah, I'd like to."<\/p>\n

England has been the laughing stock of the World Cup and while a win against the Netherlands broke a five-game streak<\/a>, one moment left the cricket world laughing.<\/p>\n

Former England captain Root – one of the world's best batters – attempted a bizarre reverse scoop shot against Logan van Beek, only to be bowled between his legs.<\/p>\n

"He's got himself into an awful position," Natalie Germanos said in commentary.<\/p>\n

\"England<\/p>\n

\ufeffMorgan could be seen breaking into laughter at the sight of Root's strange shot decision.<\/p>\n

"The position he finds himself in his is one he has played all around the ground. Absolute nutmeg, straight through his legs, cannons into middle stump," Morgan said.<\/p>\n

"Almost hesitant to complete the shot."<\/p>\n
