\ufeffShakhtar Donetsk stunned giants Barcelona 1-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday (AEDT)<\/a> to give fans of the Ukraine club some much needed cheer.<\/p>\n

Danylo Sikan scored the winner with a header in the 40th minute in the game that Shakhtar 'hosted' in Hamburg, Germany, because of the war with Russia.<\/p>\n

The result ended Barcelona's perfect Champions League record this season and moved Shakhtar into position to also advance from Group H.<\/p>\n

"It's such an ongoing show of defiance that Ukrainian football is even continuing," European football journalist Lars Sivertsen said on Stan Sport.<\/p>\n

"There have been bigger upsets but there's such an incredible emotional component to this. The fact that Ukrainian football is continuing to be played, albeit behind closed doors – because you can't have lots of fans in the stadiums for obvious safety reasons – but they're continuing to play.<\/p>\n

"Most of the big stars that Shakhtar would ordinarily have in their squad have left the country. This is not a team that can invest big money anymore and playing football in Ukraine is incredibly difficult. So incredible stuff for them to get a result against Barcelona, which is huge.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Shakhtar lost 3-1 to Porto in its first 'home' game in the Champions League this season.<\/p>\n

It played its home games in Poland last season, without winning any of them.<\/p>\n

Shakhtar is making their seventh consecutive group stage appearance but has failed to reach the knockout rounds in the last five seasons.<\/p>\n

It had won only three of its last 20 matches in European competitions, including at Antwerp this month.<\/p>\n

"Incredible stuff for Shakhtar who, let's not forget, have to basically take a bus to the border before they can fly anywhere to get to these games," Sivertsen said.<\/p>\n

"They're playing in Hamburg now, it's a real ordeal for them to get to any games in the Champions League. It matters an awful lot to them and it wasn't undeserved, it wasn't a robbery at all."<\/p>\n

A draw would have been enough to secure Barcelona a spot in the round of 16 for the first time after two straight eliminations in the group stage of Europe's top club competition.<\/p>\n

Barcelona had lost only once this season \u2014 to Real Madrid in the La Liga 'Clasico' last month.<\/p>\n

It had no attempts on target through the first hour in Hamburg, and only one the entire match.<\/p>\n

"It's one of our worst matches that I recall in recent years," Barcelona coach Xavi said.<\/p>\n

"We are not going through a good moment, we have to recognise that. It's a mental thing. But we still depend on our own results and we can qualify at home against Porto in the next round."<\/p>\n

Barcelona had beaten Shakhtar 2-1 at home in the previous round.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, \ufeffGermany forward Niclas Fullkrug scored his first Champions League goal and national teammate Julian Brandt added another for Borussia Dortmund to beat Newcastle 2-0.<\/p>\n

The German team's back-to-back victories over the Premier League team – Felix Nmecha scored for a 1-0 win in Newcastle last month – boosts its chances of progressing to the knockout rounds.<\/p>\n

Dortmund dominated from the start with Brandt and Karim Adeyemi causing problems for the Newcastle defence.<\/p>\n

Fullkrug broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when Marcel Sabitzer crossed for him to sweep the ball in under the crossbar.<\/p>\n

Brandt finally sealed the result on a counterattack in the 79th, set up by Fullkrug and Adeyemi after Kieran Trippier delivered a free kick for Newcastle.<\/p>\n
