Soulcombe's second placed run<\/a> in the Melbourne Cup<\/a> has been described as "heartbreaking" after its shocking form out of the barrier continued.<\/p>\n

The five-year-old gelding started at least four lengths behind the leader inside the first 10 seconds but then finished strong\ufeff.<\/p>\n

Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne<\/a> \ufeffexplained there was a real chance winner Without A Fight could've been run down if not for a poor jump.<\/p>\n

"You saw him in the overhead shot we saw before, how much ground he was pulling off Without A Fight in the last 50m," she said on Channel 10.<\/p>\n

"Heartbreaking for his connections; winnings that he's giving away the start like he is."<\/p>\n

Racing analyst David Gately described the performance as a sad reality for what could've been an incredible victory.<\/p>\n

"Soulcombe, it's a story we won't know because he can't jump cleanly," he said.<\/p>\n

In the gelding's preparation ahead of the Melbourne Cup, Soulcombe came seventh in the Caulfield Cup and placed third on October 7 at Flemington. Two weeks prior, he finished fourth at Caulfield. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Throughout all three races, the five-year-old had endured horrible starts, and was coming 15th with 800m to go at the Caufield Cup.<\/p>\n

Prior to the Melbourne Cup, trainer Chris Waller revealed his plans to stop troubles out of the barrier after removing his blinkers.<\/p>\n

"We'll try a few different things with Soulcombe, we'll give him a good warm-up," he said on 10.<\/p>\n

"He normally gets ponied (led by a pony) to the start, we might just try to give him a good canter down to the barriers and keep him on his toes before he goes in."<\/p>\n

Jockey Joao Moreira had foreshadowed a "need" to start strong.<\/p>\n

"He's the sort of horse that he needs a bit of help, obviously, but I can't overdo it because it's a two-mile race," Moreira said.<\/p>\n

"They might over-race behind others and it would be a nightmare. I need to get him out the best we can. It is a tough job, I know that. But all I can do is do my best."<\/p>\n

Before the race Waller had predicted Soulcombe \ufeffwould place.<\/p>\n

"Huge respect for Gold Trip… and all the talk is about Vauban, (but) I think (Soulcombe) is right up there," he told RSN Racing Pulse.<\/p>\n
