P\ufeffhil Gould missed the Kangaroos v Kiwis Pacific Championship final<\/a> on Saturday, but he didn't miss Mal Meninga and his men in his analysis after watching the replay on 9Now<\/a>'s catch up service this week.<\/p>\n

One of the sharpest minds in rugby league, Gould was stunned by Australia's sluggish performance<\/a> in a one-sided final dominated by Michael Maguire's Kiwis in a 30-0 thumping<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Asked by a fan on X, formerly Twitter, what he thought of the game, Gould \ufeffgave a lengthy response, beginning with praise for the Kiwis.<\/p>\n

"Kiwis clearly learned a lot from the week before. They changed their mindset and their game strategy. Brilliant performance," Gould said. <\/p>\n

"Just goes to show what more football at this level can do for you."<\/p>\n

Gould then examined the Kangaroos' failings, honing in on what he deems to be possible problems that run deeper than just a one off loss.<\/p>\n

He put the blowtorch on Meninga claiming the performance smacked of "lazy and complacent preparation" adding that selection may also have been "complacent".<\/p>\n

"It looked like Australia learned nothing from their win the week before. Lazy performance would reflect a lazy and complacent preparation. Maybe even a complacent selection process. Anyway, that's for smarter people than me to work out. <\/p>\n

"Australia produced an embarrassing performance. Someone has to put their hand up and take sone (sic) responsibility."<\/p>\n

Gould concluded that international rugby league was the winner, praising the Kiwis for doing their "homework", adding: "The more Test football they play, the better they will get".<\/p>\n

\ufeffGould's assessment came several days following Saturday's big loss for the Kangaroos, which may signal the end of several players careers in the green and gold jersey.<\/p>\n

Nathan Cleary's knee injury in his heroic grand final performance, ensured that Daly Cherry-Evans wore the No.7 jersey throughout the Pacific Championships, but at 34 the Manly captain has likely played his last game at Test level.<\/p>\n

Riding high after their dominant victory, the New Zealanders meanwhile, just want \ufeffmore opportunities to test themselves against the Kangaroos.<\/p>\n

"Peter V'landys if you're out there listening, \ufeffplease man, give us a [Test match]," Kiwis winger Ronaldo Mulitalo said.<\/p>\n
