Mark Taylor<\/a> has suggested Australia should split up Steve Smith<\/a> and Marnus Labuschagne<\/a>, saying the pair make it "easier" for opposing skippers when batting together.<\/p>\n

\ufeffBoth players have had indifferent World Cup campaigns so far, with neither making a century through seven matches.<\/p>\n

Taylor, who captained Australia to the 1996 World Cup final, suggested dashing keeper Josh Inglis should be put in between the pair to keep opponents on their toes.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI think Labuschagne and Smith, they're both good mates, but very similar players," he told 2GB's Wide World of Sports Radio<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

"They don't necessarily compliment each other when they're out there batting because they are similar players.<\/p>\n

"I just wonder if there's not an idea that if we're going well enough and Smith is in at four, we put Inglis in at five as someone to get on with the game a bit more, to be a bit more proactive and let Smith do what he does, which is knock the ball around.<\/p>\n

"That might be something the selectors think about because when Labuschange and Smith bat together they almost play the same way and I think it makes it easier for oppositions to set fields when they know the batting is going to be pretty consistent."<\/p>\n

Smith has particularly struggled during the World Cup, with his 238 runs coming at a paltry average of 29.28. His sole half-century and top score of 71 came against the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

Despite the ex-skipper's struggles, Taylor said he is an "automatic selection in my side".<\/p>\n

Labuschagne has fared better, \ufeffcurrently second to David Warner among Australia's World Cup runscorers, with 272 runs at an average of 38.85. He has two half-centuries, including a top score of 71 in the win over England.<\/p>\n

However, the right-hander has struggled to force the issue, with his strike rate of 79.30 by far the slowest among Australia's top six batters.<\/p>\n

Inglis has batted six times so far at the World Cup, scoring 118 runs at an average of 21.83, but with an impressive strike rate of 111.01.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
