Formula 1<\/a> finds itself in an awkward situation as it wrestles to figure out exactly what to do with its sprint format.<\/p>\n

Red Bull's<\/a> Max Verstappen<\/a> wants F1 to ditch sprint weekends entirely but McLaren<\/a> driver Lando Norris<\/a> believes there's little drivers can say that will change the minds of figureheads.<\/p>\n

Shorter sprint races were introduced as a means of getting casual F1 fans into the sport in a more palatable race distance, rather than the grand prix which lasts about two hours.<\/p>\n

One downside to the sprint races is that there is very little in the way of strategy as pit stops are effectively prohibited, notwithstanding changing to wet weather tyres.<\/p>\n

All but two sprint races this year have been won by Verstappen. His teammate Sergio Perez won in Azerbaijan while Oscar Piastri claimed victory in Qatar for McLaren.<\/p>\n

Among the criticisms of the sprint race is that it previews the grand prix that follows a day later, leaving little in the way of intrigue for the main race.<\/p>\n

Sunday's sprint at the Brazilian Grand Prix was once again claimed by Max Verstappen ahead of Norris and Perez.<\/p>\n

Asked what he would like to see from the format, Verstappen affirmed his belief it should be scrapped.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Just a normal race weekend, please. Thank you," he said.<\/p>\n

"I'm not interested in any change. I don't like it."<\/p>\n

Norris, meanwhile, bemoaned the fact that little of what they want will be considered by F1.<\/p>\n

"It doesn't matter what we say. Our choices rarely have much effect on anything. Especially with this," said Norris.<\/p>\n

"So, everything seems dictated by team bosses and what they want to do and what they choose to do."<\/p>\n

Among the considerations for 2024 is reshuffling the schedule. As it stands, qualifying for Sunday's grand prix is held on Friday while the sprint shootout and the sprint race take place in isolation on Saturday in the morning and afternoon respectively.<\/p>\n

F1 is considering returning grand prix qualifying to Saturday afternoon with the sprint race moving to Saturday morning. The sprint shootout would then move to Friday afternoon following practice.<\/p>\n

Changes to parc ferme rules after qualifying would allow teams to make changes to their car set-up. As it stands, cars cannot be altered for the remainder of the weekend after Friday's qualifying on sprint weekends.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Perez offered a wild option to spice up the sprint race by reversing the grid.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I think if they want to get this format of sprint races, we've got to change it," said Perez.<\/p>\n

"I would propose a reverse grid, something like that to make it more interesting for the fans because I don't think it's working, what we want to achieve.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Nothing really happens in these sorts of races."<\/p>\n
