Former England winger Ugo Monye has put Eddie Jones<\/a> on blast after the latter left Rugby Australia<\/a> scrambling by suddenly quitting as Wallabies coach<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n

Barely a week after Jones held a press conference in Coogee to further deny reports he was poised to walk away from his five-year contract, \ufeffhe did what many had been calling for and sacked himself less than 12 months into the deal.<\/p>\n

His tenure featured a measly two wins in nine Tests\ufeff and included the controversial axings of Wallabies greats Michael Hooper and Quade Cooper for the World Cup, at which the team failed to get out of the group stage for the first time ever.<\/p>\n

Jones was poached by Rugby Australia after being sacked by England in December. His arrival forced the sacking of Dave Rennie just months before the sport's showpiece tournament.<\/p>\n

Monye, having seen Jones' demise at England, wasn't so surprised to see his Wallabies tenure go up in smoke.<\/p>\n

"Australia had him on a long-term deal, but this whole project has been selfish and self-centred," Monye told BBC Rugby Union Daily.<\/p>\n

"I think Rugby Australia were put in a tough position. Eddie is very convincing as a person and you have to sift through some of the nonsense he says at times and you know when he is just saying things for effect.<\/p>\n

"You can't come in and uproot a coaching staff, sack off some legends of the game, take a punt and a gamble on some young kids, get booted from a World Cup and then say 'cheerio'."<\/p>\n

Jones dropped a couple of bombs on Rugby Australia on his way out the door and RA chief Phil Waugh hit back in a fiery press conference on Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\ufeffMonye says RA and Australian rugby fans should feel cheated and conned by the man who reportedly had an interview with Japan on the eve of the World Cup.<\/p>\n

"I'm just really disappointed for so many different reasons," Monye said.<\/p>\n

"The reason he went into Australia was because Dave Rennie lost his job nine months ago.<\/p>\n

"I remember watching one of his first interviews as a guy who was passionate and emotional and was crying on camera, saying what it means to come back and coach Australia as an Australian.<\/p>\n

\"Eddie<\/p>\n

"Then you started hearing more than whispers that he was having conversations with Japan. He said he was definitely staying, so where has all the integrity gone?<\/p>\n

"Rugby Australia took a gamble but they weren't at ground zero [under Dave Rennie]. There is no way they could have envisaged 10 months after they brought this guy in on a long-term deal that he would resign after bowing out of the World Cup pool stage for the first time in their history.<\/p>\n

"This stinks and this is not cool.<\/p>\n

"I interviewed loads of Aussie rugby fans in France and they said they were behind the players but not Eddie. In the last year, Eddie has lost the English rugby public and then the Australian rugby public in eight games. That's a remarkable skill."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
