Spain<\/a> and Barcelona<\/a> star Aitana Bonmati has won the women\u2019s Ballon d\u2019Or<\/a> for the first time, edging Matildas<\/a> and Chelsea<\/a> hero Sam Kerr<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Bonmati followed in the footsteps of her teammate Alexia Putellas, who took the past two awards.<\/p>\n

Bonmati claimed the prize after leading her country to victory at the Women\u2019s World Cup<\/a> in August. She also helped Barcelona win its second Champions League title and the Spanish league.<\/p>\n

Bonmati won ahead of Kerr and Salma Paralluelo.<\/p>\n

Kerr's runner-up finish continues her run of near misses, following her\ufeff third-place finishes in 2021 and 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are a country that lives football, intensely,\u201d Bonmati said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a unique talent in Spain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lionel Messi<\/a> won a record-extending eighth trophy, overcoming Manchester City and Norway forward Erling Haaland as well as PSG and France striker Kylian Mbappe.<\/p>\n

The Argentine great fulfilled his life's ambition by leading his country to the World Cup title in Qatar last year to win the one major trophy that eluded him in his storied career.<\/p>\n

Since moving to Inter Miami in the United States, Messi has already picked up his first silverware there by inspiring the team to victory in the US Leagues Cup.<\/p>\n

Messi won his first Ballon d'Or in 2009 and his seventh in 2021.<\/p>\n

Bonmati had already been awarded UEFA best women\u2019s player and the Golden Ball for the top Women\u2019s World Cup player. She scored three times and assisted twice at the tournament.<\/p>\n

Her victory came on the day the Spanish football official who provoked a players\u2019 rebellion and reckoning on gender when he kissed an unwilling player on the lips at the Women\u2019s World Cup final was banned for three years by FIFA.<\/p>\n

Luis Rubiales\u2019 conduct at the final in Sydney \u2014 and his defiant refusal to resign as Spanish soccer federation president for three weeks \u2014 distracted many people from the women\u2019s career-defining title win. Rubiales is barred from working in football until after the men\u2019s 2026 World Cup. His ban will expire before the next women\u2019s tournament in 2027.<\/p>\n

For the first time last year, the trophy awarded by France Football magazine was based on achievements from the past season. It was previously awarded based on performances through a calendar year.<\/p>\n
