Wallabies great Michael Hooper<\/a> has given a typically classy response to harsh comments from under fire coach Eddie Jones.<\/p>\n

Jones \ufeffexpanded on his decision to omit Hooper, Quade Cooper and Bernard Foley from Australia's Rugby World Cup squad in an interview with Peter FitzSimons in the Sydney Morning Herald.<\/a><\/p>\n

"The situation reminded me of when Wayne Bennett let Wally Lewis go," Jones said.<\/p>\n

\"Eddie<\/p>\n

"No one could quite understand why, but Wally Lewis wasn't a great role model for the rest of the team. And for those guys, I don't think they were the right role models for the team going forward.<\/p>\n

"Don't get me wrong, they're not bad guys. But you need guys \u2013 particularly when you've got a team like Australia has at the moment \u2013 you need guys who are obsessed with winning, obsessed with being good, and those three are past those stages.<\/p>\n

"He (Hooper) is a great guy, but the timing is not right for him."<\/p>\n

They were strange and unnecessary comments in the eyes of those who have \ufeffplayed with and covered the ultra-professional Hooper – particularly given Australia's historic French flop under Jones.<\/p>\n

Hooper and Jones are now set for an awkward reunion in Cardiff next week for the Barbarians vs Wales game at the Principality Stadium.<\/p>\n

Hooper will play for a \ufeffBarbarians team co-coached by Jones and Scott Robertson in a tribute match for Wales legend Alun Wyn Jones on November 5 (AEDT).<\/p>\n

The match will be shown live on Stan Sport.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I don't know (if it will be awkward). It's going to be fun," Hooper said on Stan Sport's coverage of the World Cup final.<\/p>\n

"I've never worked with 'Razor' Robertson before. What a track record he's got. I'm really excited. I'm just looking forward to the week and looking forward to playing at an amazing stadium against a pretty good team.<\/p>\n

\"Eddie<\/p>\n

Asked if he had a response to Jones, Hooper said: "I've got no response. He's entitled to his own opinion as are we all as we're all fans of the game. He's a bit more of a fan and he's very involved in the game. I've got nothing more to say. I'm doing what I've always done and I'm hoping to do that next week when I play for the Barbarians and potentially sevens next year.<\/p>\n

"I'm going to carry on being the best player I can be."<\/p>\n

Fiji's World Cup coach Simon Raiwalui – who previously worked with \ufeffHooper with the Wallabies – summed up the mood on Twitter.<\/p>\n

Former Wallabies captain James Horwill also took issue with the Jones comments.<\/p>\n

"I don't probably agree with some of the terminology used – and it might have been taken out of context – but moving forward we just have to get some clarity around this situation," Horwill said.<\/p>\n
