British heavyweight boxer Tyson "The Gypsy King" Fury<\/a> has clinched a controversial win by split decision over \ufeffCameroon's Francis Ngannou, taking victory despite suffering a third-round knockdown.<\/p>\n

One judge voted 95-94 in favour of Ngannou\ufeff, but the others pencilled in 96-93 and 95-94 in favour of Fury in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n

Fury was deemed to have done enough despite hitting the canvas when he copped a heavy left hand in the third of 10 rounds.\ufeff<\/p>\n

NBA stars LeBron James and Joel Embiid are among the many lashing the split-decision win by the undefeated WBC champion.<\/p>\n

Fury admitted the way the fight played out "wasn't in the script".\ufeff<\/p>\n

"He's a hell of a fighter and a hell of a lot better boxer than we thought he would be," Fury added.<\/p>\n

"He's an awkward man and a good puncher and I respect him a lot, he was very awkward, he wasn't coming forward and was waiting for me to throw.<\/p>\n

"He's given me one of my toughest fights of the last 10 years."<\/p>\n

Fury landed 71 of the 223 punches he threw, while Ngannou, a 0-0 rookie, made 59 of his 231 punches connect.<\/p>\n

Ngannou landed five more power punches than his 35-year-old opponent.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Fury was quizzed on the knockdown.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I was caught behind the head for the knockdown. I got back up and got back to my boxing," he said.<\/p>\n

"I don't know how close it was. I got the win and that's what it is."<\/p>\n

Ngannou gave a classy response to his loss.<\/p>\n

"My training camp was only three-and-a-half months and I came into this with an injury, but I don't want to give excuses," Ngannou said.<\/p>\n

"I will look at what I can do next to improve my game to come back even better.<\/p>\n

"I'm getting ready to come here and take over."<\/p>\n

Irish MMA champion \ufeffConor McGregor gave his thoughts after witnessing the showdown ringside.<\/p>\n

"Lovely shot," McGregor said of Ngannou's knockdown shot.<\/p>\n

"It caught him on the back of the head, but fair play to Tyson; he's a strong man. Francis is so strong, too, though, and Tyson just couldn't hurt him.<\/p>\n

"Heavyweight boxing is exciting, especially from ringside. There are some great fights in boxing's heavyweight division. It's on fire at the minute.<\/p>\n

"Fair play to them both.<\/p>\n

"It's a crazy game and I'm off to the gym."<\/p>\n

Fury is now set to face Ukraine's Oleksandr Usyk\ufeff in a battle for the undisputed world heavyweight title two days before Christmas, which will also be held in Riyadh.<\/p>\n

The rivals stared each other down in the ring after the Fury-Ngannou fight.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Fury took his professional record to 34-0-1 in his defeat of Ngannou, while Usyk's record is 21-0.<\/p>\n
