"Gutted" All Blacks<\/a> captain Sam Cane says he will be haunted by his red card "forever" after making unwanted history in the Rugby World Cup final.<\/a><\/p>\n

Cane became the first player to be sent off in a World Cup final after his first half high shot on Springboks centre Jesse Kriel was upgraded from a yellow card to a red.<\/p>\n

New Zealand fought on bravely with 14 men in the Paris wet but South Africa's big match composure allowed them a 12-11 victory to defend their global crown.\ufeff<\/a><\/p>\n

"Just so much hurt right now," Cane said at Stade de France.<\/p>\n

"It's actually hard to find words to explain it. It's so, so hard. I'm feeling so much hurt, but I am so proud of the group the way they fought back and gave ourselves a shot of winning that game…<\/p>\n

"So there is a lot of heartbreak in the sheds right now. It is hard."<\/p>\n

But was it the right call in such an important match?<\/p>\n

The decision to upgrade to a red did not come as a surprise given World Rugby's emphasis on player safety.<\/p>\n

"We have been here for two months now and anything around the head has ramifications," Cane said.<\/p>\n

"I'm not here to discuss whether it was the right or wrong decision. It can't be changed. Unfortunately it is something I am going to have to live with forever."<\/p>\n

All Blacks coach Ian Foster, who will now leave his post, described the loss as "heartbreaking" for the team and "gut-wrenching" for Cane.<\/p>\n

He pai\ufeffd tribute to South Africa's champion qualities but questioned why Cane copped red and Siya Kolisi was allowed to return to the game.<\/p>\n

The Springboks captain hit Ardie Savea high but the officials deemed there was mitigation and his yellow card remained that colour.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The game has got a few issues it's got to sort out," Foster said.<\/p>\n
