Ben Simmons<\/a> said he's unsure what led to his late substitution during the decisive final minutes in Brooklyn's NBA<\/a> season\ufeff opening loss to Cleveland<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Simmons had a solid showing in his first game back<\/a> but was left on the bench during the pivotal moments of Brooklyn's 114-113 home loss to the Cavaliers.<\/p>\n

He finished short of a double-double with four points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in 23 minutes on court, however was just two-of-six from the field.<\/p>\n

Backup point guard Dennis Smith Jr. played much of the fourth quarter in place of Simmons and Spencer Dinwiddie, recording 10 points and four rebounds in under 16 minutes.<\/p>\n

\"Ben<\/p>\n

"Its not easy to win in the NBA. There's not a guarantee of winning every night so you got to earn it," Simmons said.<\/p>\n

"We had too many turnovers. I think it just came down to details of the game. Just small plays that we needed that ended up being a huge play for us. Stops, rebounds and buckets."<\/p>\n

The Australian confirmed he was not on a minutes restriction and said, "You gotta ask coach, I don't know," when pressed about being substituted out of the match as it went to the wire in the closing stages.<\/p>\n

After a horror couple of seasons, the most recent of which was cut short by knee and back injuries, the three-time All-Star has a point to prove.<\/p>\n

"Overall he was a part of that stretch that really got us back in the game," Nets coach Jacques Vaughn said. "It was the physicality which he played with that kind of permeated through the group.<\/p>\n

"I think he has that ability to do that. So looking forward to him getting to 100 per cent, playing minutes for us, being disruptive for us, but I think you felt him when he was out there on the floor."<\/p>\n

The Cavaliers led 90-87 after three quarters, but the Nets opened the fourth with a 14-5 run.<\/p>\n

Brooklyn went ahead 113-111 on two Bridges free throws with 19 seconds remaining.<\/p>\n

But Donovan Mitchell's three gave Cleveland a one point lead and Brooklyn's Cam Thomas missed a shot beyond the arc for the Nets in the final seconds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
