Many already knew Peter V'landys<\/a> is a gung-ho character bold enough to take Australian rugby league to the United States, but what might come as a surprise is the ARL Commission chairman had the courage to steal from the White House.<\/p>\n

V'landys rubbed shoulders with US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden at a state dinner at the White House on Wednesday night (local time).<\/p>\n

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was locked in for the dinner and invited V'landys to join,\ufeff just over four months out from the NRL<\/a>'s historic Las Vegas season launch featuring a double header on March 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n

V'landys crossed live to Nine's Today\ufeff<\/em> on Friday morning to spruik "three or four days of festivities", headlined by a Rabbitohs-Sea Eagles and Roosters-Broncos double header.<\/p>\n

"I actually sent Pete a message yesterday saying, 'Can you steal something from the White House for me?'," Today<\/em> co-host Karl Stefanovic said.<\/p>\n

"And did you?" added co-host Sarah Abo.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffYes, I did, actually; just a knife and fork," V'landys quipped.<\/p>\n

The Today<\/em> show co-hosts burst into laughter and Abo remarked, "Not getting that back".\ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffOur prime minister, who's been fantastic over here \u2014 he has really been so impressive and a statesman," V'landys added.<\/p>\n

"I've been to every function and he's just been on fire promoting Australia.<\/p>\n

"He actually said, 'To all the Australians in the room, please don't take the cutlery', but I didn't listen; I just took the knife and the fork."<\/p>\n

V'landys plans to have 10 matches played at Las Vegas' famous Allegiant Stadium between 2024 and 2028.<\/p>\n

He believes there's enormous potential for the game through American sports betting and subscription services.<\/p>\n

He also said his end-of-season trip to the US had been "exceptional".\ufeff<\/p>\n

"It's exceeded our expectations, the popularity of it, and going to Vegas has really been a winner for us," V'landys said.<\/p>\n

"We've got 340 million potential customers in the US. If we get one per cent of those customers we will exceed our revenues in Australia. That's how big the market is over here and we're very confident in our product.<\/p>\n

"We think we've got the greatest game for all and I think the Americans will love it.<\/p>\n

"It's a five-year plan and by going into their market, into Vegas, the sports capital of the world and selling our game, I think we can get those subscriptions."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
