Nick Kyrgios<\/a> has been left to rue a number of missed opportunities after blowing a two-set lead to Dominic Thiem<\/a> to bow out of the Australian Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kyrgios had all the momentum in the early stages of the match but was unable to sustain it with Thiem running out a 4-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 winner at John Cain Arena.<\/p>\n

The Australian stunned the No.3 seed by taking the first two sets and had the crowd in raptures after sealing the second set with his patented underarm serve.<\/p>\n

Kyrgios' momentum looked to have translated to the third set as he raced to a 40-15 lead on Thiem's opening service game before the match flipped on a dime.<\/p>\n

After managing to hold his serve, Thiem showed why he is so highly regarded around the circuit, dominating his service games with ruthless efficiency for the remainder of the match.<\/p>\n

The Australian managed to win just eight out of the next 64 points on Thiem's serve, winning three of them on Thiem's final service game of the fourth set.<\/p>\n

With the Austrian holding a 5-4 lead having just broken Kyrgios' serve, the Aussie was handed a point penalty by chair umpire Damien Dumusois for smashing a ball into the stands out of frustration.<\/p>\n

The point penalty was awarded due to Dumusois handing Kyrgios a warning earlier in the match after the Australian had repeatedly controlled about crowd noise and exchanged pleasantries with a fan in the stands.<\/p>\n

"We've seen the good Kyrgios, and this is unfortunately a little bit of the bad," Aussie tennis great Todd Woodbridge said on Nine's coverage.<\/p>\n

Despite starting the game in a 0-15 hole, Kyrgios gave himself a look at breaking back, before Thiem closed the set.<\/p>\n

According to Kyrgios, the tide officially turned back in the third set, when he was unable to capitalise on two break points on Thiem's serve.<\/p>\n

"I take one of those breakpoints in the third set early I think the match is over in an hour and 45 minutes," he said after the match.<\/p>\n

"I could definitely feel he was going away towards the end of the second .He was a bit rattled, and I played a heck of a first game in the third set. <\/p>\n

"I just missed a couple of balls by really nothing, you know. Maybe if I played more last year, maybe if I trained more, I make those balls, I'm not too sure. But in that moment I didn't make it, and then he just steadied the ship a little bit. <\/p>\n

"He broke me early in the third. I felt like my serving kind of went away a little bit. I think that's a body thing. I just don't feel as if — the load isn't there yet quite to be serving that many — like over three days, I played 10 sets of tennis, almost seven hours of tennis. <\/p>\n

"So it's pretty remarkable that my body is actually the way it is at the moment. I'm super proud of it."<\/p>\n
