American tennis<\/a> player Jenson Brooksby says he was tested for doping<\/a> \u201cjust hours after\u201d his 18-month suspension for missing three tests was announced.<\/p>\n

Following the ban being announced, Brooksby took to social media to stamp out rumours he was taking performance-enhancing substances and blamed his phone ringer being off for the third violation that led to the ban.<\/p>\n

"I have never taken a banned substance in my life, and I was open and honest with the ITIA throughout my case," Brooksby wrote.<\/p>\n

"I understand that it is my responsibility and will learn and grow. I accepted that two of my missed tests were my fault, but I continue to maintain that my June 4, 2022 missed test should be set aside.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoever made that decision does not care about the players' mental health.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my 5th test since March 2023 including 1 test outside my 1 hour window,\u201d he added. \u201cI have never failed a test.\u201d<\/p>\n

The International Tennis Integrity Agency said that Brooksby was banned until January 2025 after an independent tribunal determined he missed three drug tests in the span of a year.<\/p>\n

The ITIA said Brooksby accepted that his \u201cwhereabouts failures\u201d for two of the missed tests \u201cwere valid\u201d and the tribunal found his degree of fault for the other test \u201cwas high.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he did not know a doping control officer was trying to find him that morning; his mobile phone was on silent when there was a call to it and his hotel room was never called.<\/p>\n

"I was awake and had nothing to hide," Brooksby added.<\/p>\n

Under anti-doping rules, athletes can be penalised without a positive test if they have three \u201cwhereabout failures\u201d within 12 months.<\/p>\n

Brooksby, who is from California and is now based in Dallas, has a three-week window in which to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, something he plans to do.<\/p>\n

Brooksby has been ranked as high as No.33. He is currently at No.301 after going most of the season without competing because he needed two operations for dislocated wrist tendons: on his left arm in March, and on his right in May.<\/p>\n

His last match on tour came at the Australian Open in January.<\/p>\n
