There are growing calls for Rugby Australia<\/a> to get on the phone to the Japanese Rugby Football Union to find out whether Eddie Jones<\/a> has been part of the interview process to be its new head coach<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To date, the governing body's chairman Hamish McLennan and CEO Phil Waugh have taken Jones' word at face value despite multiple reports that he is in Japan's crosshairs.<\/p>\n

That's been of little comfort for fans or former players, who have implored rugby's most senior figures to seek clarity.<\/p>\n

In his post-Rugby World Cup<\/a> press conference, Jones said he would not be partaking in a second interview with Japan's governing body.<\/p>\n

Now, former Wallabies players Drew Mitchell, Matt Giteau, and Adam Ashley-Cooper have weighed in.<\/p>\n

"There's been all this chat and dialogue about Phil Waugh, the CEO, who hasn't spoken to the Japanese union. Just get on the phone. Let's get clarity," said Mitchell on The Good, The Bad & The Rugby: Australia<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n

"The ambiguity creates frustration, creates anger, and creates toxicity on social [media]. Let's get as clear as we possibly can because at the moment we're having to take Eddie's word for it when at the time he's being questioned.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We're not getting anything from Hamish McLennan or Phil Waugh. Get as much information as you can, get clear, and then give it to the people that actually care about this game.<\/p>\n

\"Adam<\/p>\n

"Where we are at the moment \u2013 in terms of the disengagement of the supporters to Rugby Australia, to the Wallabies and everything that is going on \u2013 we need as much clarity as we can get, so give it to us. If you don't have it yet, seek it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Call up the Japanese union and say, 'Have you made contact with Eddie Jones? Where are you at with it?' If it's nothing, then great, we can start to believe that because at the moment Eddie is saying, 'I haven't made a call' but there are still parts of us that aren't believing it."<\/p>\n

Ashley-Cooper said he'd spoken to players who found out they were getting on a plane to go to the World Cup some 12 hours before boarding.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said representatives have spoken of "chaos" at training.<\/p>\n

"We're seeing chaos in a game without clarity or accuracy," said Ashley-Cooper.<\/p>\n

"We're all asking questions. Transparency is very important, particularly for ex-players.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We're their biggest ambassadors."<\/p>\n

\"Eddie<\/p>\n

Mitchell said he hopes there are "no more smoke and mirrors" and Jones' decision to stay wasn't being used as a ploy to be sacked and receive a pay-out.<\/p>\n

"Eddie called a press conference and all the bigwigs of Rugby Australia are over here in France and they couldn't be there," Mitchell said.<\/p>\n

"I hope that he's not trying to get himself sacked so that he gets paid out rather than walking and not getting paid out."<\/p>\n

Like many before him, Mitchell was critical of Jones' decision to leave veteran players at home \u2013 namely ex-captain Michael Hooper and veteran fly-half Quade Cooper.<\/p>\n

In doing so, Jones effectively ended their professional playing career at the international level.<\/p>\n

Giteau echoed Mitchell's sentiment amid calls for transparency and labelled the situation a "shocking look" if Jones parted company having picked a developing squad.<\/p>\n

Jones has said the decision to axe those veterans was because they were past their best.<\/p>\n

The youngest Wallabies squad in Rugby World Cup history bombed out before the quarter-finals and will have to wait four more years to live up to their so-called potential.<\/p>\n

"Maybe this is the cynical side of me \u2013 because we don't necessarily have clarity \u2013 you've gone down a route and you've backed a young developing squad, stick it through," Mitchell said.<\/p>\n

"You've also made some pretty crucial calls on some players that in my opinion should have been there and would have helped us.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"You've got four years to develop for the next World Cup and two years before the British & Irish Lions. They could have helped with some of that experience you left at home, but you didn't give us any clarity on that. All that being said, if you're staying, be fully committed.<\/p>\n

"Some people in our comments [section] have said, 'You guys backed him'. Yeah, at the time. We were lured in.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We wanted to believe \u2026 we had to get around the team but then there came a point for me personally where there were some decisions made, some lack of transparency, where I was like, 'I've got to say something'. I can't sit there and blindly back something.\u00a0<\/p>\n
