England<\/a> wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow<\/a> still seethes at the thought of his stumping in this year's Ashes<\/a> at Lord's.<\/p>\n

In a new book \u2013 Bazball: The Inside Story of a Test Cricket Revolution<\/em> \u2013 Bairstow has reluctantly opened up on the saga that rocked the series during the second Test.<\/p>\n

The well-documented actions by Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey have been the subject of intense criticism from English players, although Bairstow has largely shied away from commenting on the matter.<\/p>\n

Now, he's scratched the scabs of that loss explaining that the dismissal and his own attempts to run out Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne are different.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the wake of Bairstow's stumping, social media lit up with footage of him trying to throw down Labuschagne's wickets.<\/p>\n

It's different, he believes, because Labuschagne started outside the crease. Bairstow was in his crease when he took guard but wandered out after the last ball of the over was bowled.<\/p>\n

"It wouldn't come into my mind, you know, because you're stood in your crease. If you're starting in your crease, then it wouldn't even enter my mind to do that. If you're batting out of your crease\u2026 they're two different things," said Bairstow in an extract published in part on the UK Telegraph.<\/p>\n

"If you're starting out of your crease, you're trying to gain an advantage. If you start in your crease, and not trying to take a run, and you finish in your crease…\u00a0<\/p>\n

"That's the bit \u2013 if you try to gain an advantage, then it's fair game. But if you're starting in your crease, you've ducked, tap, tap, scratched. I've even dragged my bat, looked up, and then gone."<\/p>\n

In the aftermath, criticism was directed at Australia for not withdrawing their appeal in the so-called spirit of cricket.<\/p>\n

Players were taunted in the pavilion, verbally attacked, and booed in the remaining matches.<\/p>\n

England players don't dispute it was out, but wonder whether it was the right thing to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Given the same circumstances, most of England's players who were asked said they would have withdrawn their appeal.<\/p>\n

Bairstow worried about the greater implications of such an incident, suggesting that could trickle down to the grassroots.<\/p>\n

It was put to him that in grade cricket in Australia and elsewhere in grassroots cricket, dismissals such as Bairstow's are commonplace.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"First time I've heard that. I've never seen it happen from someone starting in their crease," said Bairstow.<\/p>\n

"I don't think you want that filtering down into kids' cricket. Look at the Mankads and everything like that. You want young kids to be out there batting and having fun, not thinking about whether the fielders might do this or that.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It might tarnish people's enjoyment of the game that we're trying to get kids into. You want to be out there batting and bowling, rather than thinking about the 11 different ways you can get someone out."<\/p>\n

The incident happened with England charging towards Australia's total. Ultimately, they fell short and at that point were 2-0 down in the series.<\/p>\n

The moment undoubtedly will live on in Ashes folklore for decades to come \u2013 albeit, with different views depending on which side of the world you live on.<\/p>\n

"There's nothing I can do about it," said Bairstow.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The decision was that I was out, and I moved on. I've not brought it up since. I've kept quiet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's on them. If that's how they want to go about it and win a cricket game or what have you, then so be it."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
