Former NRL star Todd Carney<\/a> admits he regrets letting alcohol issues derail his once-promising career, revealing he is now seven months sober.<\/p>\n

Carney burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old in 2004 with the Canberra Raiders<\/a> and looked like one of the NRL's brightest prospects until repeated alcohol-related off-field incidents brought his career to a grinding halt.<\/p>\n

He won the Dally M Medal<\/a> in 2010 and was twice named the NRL's best five-eighth (2010 and 2013), but found himself out of the league in 2014 at just 28 when he was sacked by the Cronulla Sharks due to the infamous 'bubbler' incident<\/a> where he was pictured urinating into his own mouth.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Bulldogs great James Graham's podcast, The Bye Round<\/em>, Carney said being sober makes his previous alcohol-related issues even more "stupid" in his eyes.<\/p>\n

"Now that I don't drink, I look back on it and I'm pissed off at myself and how I handled it," he said.<\/p>\n

"Because I look back now and I go, well why didn't the penny drop and go, 'That's it, you've got the rest of your life to have a beer'. But I didn't see it that way. Now it pisses me off a little bit.<\/p>\n

"I still talk about the 'bubbler' and those sorts of things, but I don't laugh too much about it. Now looking back at it, it's stupid. That's all it was. It eats at me now that I don't drink, the shit that I let go of."<\/p>\n

Carney became somewhat of a rugby league journeyman following his NRL sacking, with a number of stints with different clubs in the UK,\ufeff and his life has since stabilised dramatically since his playing days ended.<\/p>\n

The 37-year-old \ufeffnow sees a counsellor every week, and opened up on the rock-bottom moment where he booked himself into rehab, where he eventually spent 30 days earlier this year.<\/p>\n

"I got out the shower and got ready to brush my teeth to go to work and I physically couldn't look at myself to brush my teeth," he said.<\/p>\n

"So I sat back on the bed and I said to (his partner) Susie (Bradley), like, 'I need to make a change'. I need some help around this and how I'm feeling. She was at work and she said, 'Just stay at home for the day'. I rang work and told them, and they were really good about it.<\/p>\n

"I needed to work out why it was that I was doing it. So I went to rehab for 30 days. I felt I didn't need it, but I did need to go to show that I was serious about it. Not for anyone else, other than myself.<\/p>\n

\"Todd<\/p>\n

"So I told my close mates, my family, obviously my work place that I was going to get professional help so I would stay on that road.<\/p>\n

"That was the first time I'd done it for myself.<\/p>\n

"I say if I'm going to do something and I'm determined to do it, I do it. If I put the things in place that I need to do, I'm comfortable to know that when I'll put my head to rest every night that I'll be sober."<\/p>\n

Carney played 71 games for the Raiders, 44 games for the Sydney Roosters and 51 games for the Sharks between 2004 and 2014.<\/p>\n
