Former Manchester United<\/a> goalkeeper Mark Bosnich<\/a> has revealed the tragic incident players weren't able to talk about with Sir Bobby Charlton, after his death \ufeffover the weekend.<\/p>\n

Charlton – who died, aged 86<\/a> – was on board during the Munich air disaster in 1958 which claimed the lives of 23 people, including eight United players.<\/p>\n

The England representative was the last remaining survivor of the crash.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Nine's TODAY Show\ufeff,<\/em> Bosnich explained that Charlton suffered "survivor's guilt" after the incident as he went on to captain United to a European Cup win in 1968.<\/p>\n

"Ironically enough we were always told not to ask him \ufeffabout the crash but it's obviously come out in later years that he's spoken about it that he did have … survivor's guilt, on that terrible plane crash that decimated the entire team and there's no doubt it would've had a big bearing on the one's that did survive going and lifting the trophy 10 years later," he said.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"Definitely think it would've been in his mind, their famous manager the \ufefflate Sir Matt Busby, who we were very fortunate to have contact with as young players especially."<\/p>\n

Charlton finished his career as one of the all-time greats with a 1966 FIFA World Cup to his name and three Football League First Division trophies.<\/p>\n

He also won the Ballon d'Or\ufeff in 1966 before finishing runner-up the following two years.<\/p>\n

\ufeffBosnich remembered the legend as a figurehead at United who every young player was told to look up to.<\/p>\n

"For so long he was Manchester United\ufeff, as a young kid being there from 16 to 19 he was always put up as the epitome of somebody who was what you want to be at Manchester United," he said.<\/p>\n

"… An absolute gentleman, humble, and someone Sir Alex Ferguson would say to a lot of us young players, this is the person you want to look up to, this is the person you really want to be. Very, very sad."<\/p>\n

Bosnich gave further insight into the humble characteristics of his own Charlton experience.<\/p>\n

"My \ufeffbiggest recount of a story was the second time I was there (at Man Utd)," he said.<\/p>\n

"We'd just beaten Palmeiras in the World Club Championship in Tokyo and we were having breakfast the following morning and I was going back up to my room and he was in the elevator as well so he spoke to us and said how well we'd done and so forth.<\/p>\n

"And I just said, 'Thanks but it'd still be great to emulate you guys and win (a European trophy)' and he said, 'Just remember we did the European Cup in '68 but the following year we didn't win the World Club Championship, you just did so just enjoy it son'.<\/p>\n

"That was my most vivid memory, other than when you go there and you meet him and so forth."<\/p>\n

\ufeffOld Trafford was a scene of mourning and commemoration following Charlton's death with fans flocking to the storied stadium.<\/p>\n

Football fans laid flowers and scarves outside Old Trafford and left messages as a tribute to Charlton. One of the messages, from the fan group The 1958, said: \u201cHistory, dignity and integrity are what you gave to our great club. Our promise to you is to make sure it stays.\u201d<\/p>\n

A wreath was laid at the base of the statue of Charlton, George Best and Denis Law \u2014 the so-called \u201cTrinity\u201d of former United players \u2014 in the forecourt of the stadium.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
