A rival NRL<\/a> club has confirmed they have been approached about their interest in recruiting the injury ravaged Storm<\/a> gun Ryan Papenhuyzen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In his weekly column for the Sydney Morning Herald<\/em><\/a>, Nine's Danny Weidler<\/a> reported a third party had approached the unnamed club to gauge their interest in his signature.<\/p>\n

Papenhuyzen signed a three-year contract extension with the Storm in 2021 on a reported $2 million deal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since then though, he's spent a chunk of time on the sidelines dealing with concussions, before that horror knee injury kept him out for more than a year.<\/p>\n

Then, in just his third game of his comeback, Papenhuyzen suffered another injury setback when his ankle was broken in a tackle in the Storm's qualifying final loss to the Broncos<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Weidler reported it was common practice for clubs to use third parties to feel out interest in sensitive contract negotiations, as it's easy for them to distance themselves should that interest be made public.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, the Storm have done just that \u2013 with general manager Frank Ponissi denying suggestions Papenhuyzen will leave the club.<\/p>\n

Weidler also reported Papenhuyzen himself had no knowledge of any discussion surrounding a potential exit.<\/p>\n

Although Papenhuyzen is a fan favourite among Storm fans, his leaving the club could make sense.<\/p>\n

It would free up a large chunk of salary cap room, and they've also got a star on the rise in Sualauvi Fa'alogo.<\/p>\n

He's only played one game at the top level \u2013 in Melbourne's round 27 win over the Broncos \u2013 but to say he impressed would be an understatement.<\/p>\n

He scored two tries \u2013 the first came with virtually his first touch of the Steeden \u2013 and drew comparisons to a young Benji Marshall and Billy Slater.<\/p>\n

Papenhuyzen himself described Fa'alogo as a "special player".<\/p>\n

"It's just unfortunate, he's probably playing NRL week-in, week-out at another club, but he had to bide his time and that's what he gets the fruits for now," he said after that match.<\/p>\n

Nick Meaney has also proven to be a more than capable fullback.<\/p>\n

Papenhuyzen suffered a dislocated ankle, broken fibula, a ruptured medial ligament and a ruptured syndesmosis in that tackle.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In surgery, doctors inserted a plate in the outside, as well as 10 screws. He also had a 'tightrope' inserted to allow the syndesmosis to heal.<\/p>\n

Despite all this, Papenhuyzen is still hopeful to make the field for round one next season.<\/p>\n

"Doctor Ben Foster in Brisbane, he was really happy, he's been messaging me since then to stay on top of the pain and what I need to do going forward," he said on the Ausmerican Aces YouTube show Clubhouse<\/em> last month.<\/p>\n

"Return to play? I'm not sure, but hopefully I'm training in the New Year. I think that's the plan.<\/p>\n

"That's no shattered knee cap, which I'm grateful for, but at the same time, it's still a big rehab ahead (but) hopefully good to go for round one next year."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
