Cameron McInnes<\/a>' last season in the Red V has taken a disastrous twist, with the star Dragons utility rupturing his ACL at training this morning.<\/p>\n

The Dragons<\/a> confirmed the news in a statement, with the hooker\/lock facing a six to nine month recovery which could end his stint with the club.<\/p>\n

McInnes recently signed with the Sharks on a four-year deal<\/a>, with St George Illawarra's local rivals swooping in when McInnes became frustrated with his club's unwillingness to start talks on a long-term contract extension.<\/p>\n

But with his departure not coming until the end of the season, the injury will be a huge blow to coach Anthony Griffin's 2021 planning, whether McInnes was to start at hooker in the back row.<\/p>\n

Griffin has previously indicated that he would reinstate Ben Hunt as the Dragons' halfback, with that plan seemingly dependent on McInnes returning to the No.9 jersey this season.<\/p>\n

However, the ACL injury takes that option away from the first year St George Illawarra coach and could potentially fast-track the signing of Andrew McCullough who has consistently linked with a reunion with his former Broncos coach this off-season.<\/p>\n

Should the Dragons fail to recruit a new hooker they will be forced to either persist with Paul McGregor's failed plan to turn Hunt into a hooker at club level or give fringe first grader Billy Brittain – a 26-year-old with just seven NRL appearances under his belt – a prolonged chance at the top level.<\/p>\n

McInnes has scored 17 tries in 130 games for the Rabbitohs and Dragons since his debut in 2014.<\/p>\n
