Boris Becker<\/a> is returning to coaching for the first time since the six-time grand slam tennis winner's release from a British prison last year, with world No.6 Holger Rune<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Becker told broadcaster Eurosport on a podcast published on Thursday that he will work with the 20-year-old Danish player for the rest of the season, starting at the Swiss Indoors next week. <\/p>\n

The German tennis legend was released from prison last December<\/a> after serving eight months of a two-and-a-half-year sentence for tax evasion.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes me a little proud that he asked me. The contact has existed for a long time. Now it was a very good fit," Becker said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy calendar allows it and I have always been interested in Holger because he is on the tennis court with so much commitment and temperament."<\/p>\n

While Becker is out of prison following a stint he described as "brutal"<\/a>, he won't be able to return to Wimbledon<\/a>, where he won three titles, due to his tax evasion conviction.<\/p>\n

It remains unclear when Becker will be allowed to return to the UK, with post-conviction travel bans able to last for up to a decade. According to the Sydney Morning Herald<\/a>, Becker's deportation order could last for 10 years unless it is revoked due to 'exceptional circumstances'.<\/p>\n

"Any foreign national who has been convicted of a crime and deported is prohibited from returning for as long as the deportation order made against them remains in force," a Home Office spokesperson told London's Daily Telegraph<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Becker revealed that he had been in contact with Rune since first meeting the Danish star at the age of 15-16 years old, when he was coaching Novak Djokovic<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n

At this stage, it remains to be seen how long Becker and Rune will work together.<\/p>\n

"We have always stayed in conversation. And now the question came: 'Can you help me?' And my answer was: 'Yes, let me visit you in Monte Carlo', Becker said.<\/p>\n

"He then talked about the rest of the year. That was OK with me and I freed up time for Basel, Paris and, if we make it, Turin (the venue for the eight-man ATP Finals). After that, we'll decide whether the cooperation has a future and whether we'll go into 2024 together."<\/p>\n

Becker signalled he would focus on the mental side of the game and described Rune as \u201ca rough diamond that needs polishing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 55-year-old German previously coached Djokovic from 2014 through 2016.<\/p>\n

Before his release in December, Becker served eight months in prison for illicitly transferring large amounts of money and hiding assets after he was declared bankrupt.<\/p>\n

With a career-high slot of fourth in August, Rune is the highest-ranked Danish male player ever and has reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon.<\/p>\n

Since his loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon quarter-finals in July, the Dane has won just one match, including a first-round loss at the US Open and a loss to Miomir Kecmanovic in Stockholm on Wednesday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
