Eels<\/a> forward Andrew Davey has\ufeff joined the growing list of NRL<\/a> players forced into retirement due to repeated concussions.<\/p>\n

Parramatta announced in a statement on Wednesday that Davey had retired following "advice from medical experts".<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old was contracted to the Eels until the end of 2024, but has made a decision for the betterment of his long-term health following a series of concussions throughout his career, some of which were suffered this year.<\/p>\n

Roosters stalwarts Jake Friend<\/a> and Boyd Cordner<\/a> both retired during the 2021 season due to concussion.<\/p>\n

Sharks great Wade Graham\ufeff played his final game in September<\/a> and one factor behind his retirement was his concussion-plagued history.<\/p>\n

Davey's retirement ended a 44-game career including two stints at the Eels, one at the Sea Eagles and a brief stay at the Bulldogs.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"For a battler from Central Queensland who wasn't supposed to play one game of NRL, this career has plenty for me to be proud of," Davey said.<\/p>\n

"It may not be the ending I would have liked, but truth is, I lived my fairytale for five years.<\/p>\n

"I'd like to thank the Parramatta Eels admin staff, the medical team and all coaches at the club. The genuine care and support I received throughout this process is greatly appreciated and I couldn't ask for better treatment in making this decision.<\/p>\n

"I'm extremely grateful to have such supportive family and friends and I'm also proud of the lifelong friendships I made during my time in the NRL."<\/p>\n

Renowned sports physiotherapist Brien Seeney, known as NRL Physio on X, acknowledged Davey after his retirement announcement.<\/p>\n

"Putting his long-term \ufeffhealth first, wish him the very best in retirement," Seeney wrote.<\/p>\n

Davey left his home and carpentry business in Queensland to chase his NRL dream.\ufeff<\/p>\n
