Kenyan marathon<\/a> runner Titus Ekiru has copped a 10-year ban after twice testing positive for banned substances and twice tampering with an investigation undertaken by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).<\/p>\n

A top Kenyan doctor injected Ekiru with banned substances, gave him prohibited tablets and was involved in covering the athlete's tracks.<\/p>\n

Until the AIU announced this week that Ekiru had been banned\ufeff, the 31-year-old sat equal sixth in World Athletics' all-time men's marathon rankings, having won the 2021 Milan Marathon in the time of two hours, two minutes and 57 seconds (2:02:57).<\/p>\n

He scored another victory at the Abu Dhabi Marathon later in 2021 in the time of 2:06:13.<\/p>\n

However, \ufeffurine samples taken at both of those marathons tested positive to prohibited substances and, in the words of an AIU statement, he provided "false\/misleading information and documentation".<\/p>\n

He tested positive to triamcinolone acetonide at the Milan Marathon, before testing positive to pethidine and its marker norpethidine at the Adu Dhabi Marathon.<\/p>\n

Ekiru's Milan Marathon result has been disqualified, as have all results of his since, leading to him being stripped of all prizes and money.<\/p>\n

Ekiru indicated initially he would contest the charges, but he decided against doing so after being faced with substantial evidence against him.\ufeff<\/p>\n

His ban runs from June 28, 2022 until June 27, 2032.<\/p>\n

The investigation uncovered three undocumented hospital visits on which injections and the providing of tablets took place. The senior doctor who assisted Ekiru's doping claimed the hospital trips were not documented because "the athlete had attended early in the morning, before the registration offices had opened".<\/p>\n

"It was testimony of the Nandi county director of medical services which solidified the case against Ekiru with a series of damning conclusions," the AIU statement said.\ufeff<\/p>\n

AIU chairman David Howman hailed the work of various parties involved in the investigation and delivered an emphatic message.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The outcome in thi\ufeffs case is testimony to the collaboration between the AIU and ADAK [Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya], but even more so to the important co-operation from the most senior medical official of the Nandi county government who provided significant evidence needed to ascertain the truth in this case and uncover the complicity of a senior doctor working in one of the county hospitals," Howman said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffGovernment officials are now working alongside ADAK and the AIU to uncover doping in Kenyan athletics and expose the networks that may be involved.<\/p>\n

"For athletes involved in doping and the entourage who assist them, there is one strong message from this case \u2014 this is nowhere to hide."<\/p>\n

The AIU has requested ADAK to refer the conduct of the doctor to criminal authorities in Kenya for further investigation.\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
