Australian swimming<\/a> great Giaan Rooney hopes the sport can learn and improve after the findings of a damning report were leaked this week.<\/p>\n

The results of a six-month investigation were handed to Swimming Australia<\/a> in December 2021, but the governing body had refused to release it in full.<\/p>\n

The 114-page document was seen by News Corp and devastating details were made public on Monday.<\/p>\n

The report found young swimmers and coaches were routinely subjected to emotional and physical abuse, and many body-shamed to the point they developed eating disorders and mental health problems.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"It's being treated very seriously, and so it well should," Rooney, who won gold at the 2004 Athens Games, told Nine's Today<\/em> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

"What I'm taking from it, I'm so proud of everyone who came forward and submitted their background and what they'd been through, because that would have been a huge step for all of them to take.<\/p>\n

"I sincerely believe we can't move forward until we know what we're dealing with, and this report has obviously revealed some shocking findings.<\/p>\n

"Hopefully the chance now is to change things for the better for all the people in swimming."<\/p>\n

The report specifically detailed the abuse female swimmers and coaches are subjected to within the Australian system.<\/p>\n

But Rooney believes male athletes \ufeffare also treated inappropriately at times.<\/p>\n

"It's a credit to a lot of our athletes that we've been performing so well for so long," she said.<\/p>\n

"It's important to note this is not just female athletes, this is male athletes as well.<\/p>\n

"We're looking forward and looking ahead, trying to make sure we have the most attractive sport across the board to encourage… we need more athletes than ever before.<\/p>\n

"It needs to start with being an inclusive, happy environment.\ufeff"<\/p>\n
